Saturday, 2. Tliis morn<strong>in</strong>g a detachment <strong>of</strong> 200 men<br />

went forward to mend the roads and about CO back to<br />

mend some that were not f<strong>in</strong>ished ;<br />

before the rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>of</strong><br />

the army landed the battoes and took them up the falls,<br />

all the battoes got up tliat carry<strong>in</strong>g place which is 4 or 5<br />

miles above Saratoga.<br />

Sabbath y\ 1755. Our army set out <strong>from</strong> that land<strong>in</strong>g<br />

above these falls at half an hour after 10 <strong>of</strong> the clock and<br />

came to Fort Nicholson about 6 at night, with our battoes<br />

and the stores but the two field pieces that we brought all<br />

that way with us were not able to arrive there that day the<br />

way not be<strong>in</strong>g all repaired.<br />

Monday, 4**", at Fort Nicholson. A very ra<strong>in</strong>y night last<br />

night and this morn<strong>in</strong>g till noon. Our stores received considerable<br />

damage <strong>in</strong> land<strong>in</strong>g so late last night, but took<br />

good care <strong>of</strong> them <strong>in</strong> the morn<strong>in</strong>g ; this is a pleasant well<br />

situated place here at the carry<strong>in</strong>g or Fort Nicholson.<br />

Tuesday, 5*'\ A fair pleasant day. A scout <strong>of</strong> 30 men<br />

sent to Wood Creek and another scout <strong>of</strong> 10 men sent to<br />

Lake St. Sacrament.<br />

Wednesday, G"'. A fair day. The scout sent out yester-<br />

day returned today br<strong>in</strong>g no news <strong>of</strong> the enemy ;<br />

there is<br />

a considerable number <strong>of</strong> our army now that are sick. I<br />

myself have been ill these two days but not conf<strong>in</strong>ed. I<br />

hope it will wear <strong>of</strong>f. We have made a thorough search <strong>in</strong><br />

our bread cask, and f<strong>in</strong>d much damage <strong>in</strong> the bread, the<br />

cask be<strong>in</strong>g poorly made. A soldier one Bickenstaff was<br />

whipt for pr<strong>of</strong>ane swear<strong>in</strong>g, a sodomitical attempt 100<br />

lashes and drummed out <strong>of</strong> the army with a rope about his<br />

neck, and ordered to be sent to a convenient place there to<br />

be kept and placed till the Crown Po<strong>in</strong>t expedition was<br />

over.<br />

Thursday, Aug. 7"'. A fair day, orders given to build<br />

two store houses—hands sent to cut and hew timber, peal<br />

bark and a considerable number <strong>of</strong> sticks <strong>of</strong> hewn timber<br />

was drawn by men with a rope. A scout <strong>of</strong> men came <strong>in</strong><br />

today who had discovered the tracks <strong>of</strong> about 20 Indians<br />

about a mile to the East, travell<strong>in</strong>g to the South.<br />

Friday, 8"'. We are now a great number <strong>of</strong> hands br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

timber, peal<strong>in</strong>g bark and fram<strong>in</strong>g store houses, A<br />

scout <strong>of</strong> about 30 men sent to the drowned lands to see<br />

what discovery can be made that way.
