Interest, on the Consideration <strong>of</strong> the S<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g or the depre-<br />

ciat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the hills, and it passed <strong>in</strong> the affirmative." It<br />

was voted that the treasurer "shall take £2 per cent per<br />

annnm for the last year End<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> May last." The town<br />

treasurer was also directed to "let out the bills for this<br />

year Com<strong>in</strong>g as Old Ten"" bills at the rate <strong>of</strong> £6 upon the<br />

Hundred for Interest and at the rate <strong>of</strong> £2 Upon the Hundred<br />

for their depreciat<strong>in</strong>g, or S<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> their Value."<br />

The money "produced by the sale <strong>of</strong> the school lands,"<br />

was voted to be "let out upon <strong>in</strong>terest," at the same rate,<br />

"the town runn<strong>in</strong>g the risque <strong>of</strong> the depreciat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />

bills."<br />

Liberty Granted to Liberty was granted to the <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong><br />

the Second Pre- the sccoud preciuct "to sell 200 acres <strong>of</strong><br />

land on the back side <strong>of</strong> Whiteloaf hills<br />

that was formerly sequestered for the use and benefit <strong>of</strong><br />

said prec<strong>in</strong>ct, which land with 300 more formerly granted<br />

them was to be <strong>in</strong> lieu <strong>of</strong> their right and <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> or to<br />

the land ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the meadow or common field <strong>in</strong> <strong>Northampton</strong>,<br />

sequestered for the m<strong>in</strong>istry provided they rel<strong>in</strong>quish<br />

their right or <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> or to the land sequestered<br />

ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the 1*' Prec<strong>in</strong>ct Sc do aquit and discharge the same<br />

<strong>from</strong> all demands <strong>of</strong> or <strong>from</strong> the 2'' parish <strong>in</strong> said town on<br />

account <strong>of</strong> said sequestered land ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the 1^' prec<strong>in</strong>ct."<br />

Additional Grant In 1702,^ B, triangular tract <strong>of</strong> land conta<strong>in</strong>-<br />

Divided. Rule j^g about 3,000 acrcs, ly<strong>in</strong>g between <strong>Northampton</strong>,<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield, and Westfield, was<br />

granted by the General Court to <strong>Northampton</strong> and West-<br />

field. After forty-six years' possession as common land,<br />

a proposition was made <strong>in</strong> town-meet<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>its</strong> sale or<br />

division. This was promptly negatived, but at the afternoon<br />

session that vote was reconsidered, and the matter<br />

postponed till January 30'*', 174^. At that meet<strong>in</strong>g, "after<br />

the matter was thoroughly debated," the decision was<br />

reached to divide all the land <strong>in</strong> the "additional grant."<br />

In February, rules for the division were adopted, a survey<br />

and plot <strong>of</strong> the land ordered, and a list <strong>of</strong> the polls and<br />
