eroy's Company. Major Pouieroy entered with much zeal<br />

upon the projected campaign aga<strong>in</strong>st Canada.<br />

Witli<strong>in</strong> ten months after his return <strong>from</strong> that expe-<br />

dition, he was specially engaged <strong>in</strong> rais<strong>in</strong>g men for this<br />

undertak<strong>in</strong>g. The <strong>in</strong>vasion <strong>of</strong> Canada had always been<br />

popular with the people, and <strong>in</strong> less than sixty days he<br />

succeeded <strong>in</strong> enlist<strong>in</strong>g a company <strong>of</strong> about one hundred<br />

soldiers. The <strong>of</strong>ficers were Nathaniel Kellogg and William<br />

Lyman, Lieutenants ; John<br />

Stebb<strong>in</strong>s, Ensign ; Ebenezer<br />

K<strong>in</strong>gsley, William Smith, Noah Clap, and Elijah Smith,<br />

Sergeants ; Samuel Lynde, Hezekiah Smith, John Wait,<br />

Richard Wilde, Corporals ; David Darby and Noah Pixley.<br />

Drummers. These men were <strong>in</strong> service <strong>from</strong> June,<br />

1746, to October, 1747. The company was then re-enlisted<br />

for sixty-one days more.<br />

When the Canada expedition was abandoned, the<br />

soldiers enlisted <strong>from</strong> this section were employed upon the<br />

was detailed <strong>in</strong> April, under Col. William Williams, to rebuild<br />

Fort <strong>Massachusetts</strong>, and it is possible that a part <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Northampton</strong> Company was among those troops. June<br />

23'\ Brig. -Gen. Joseph D wight, who had command <strong>of</strong> the<br />

western division <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Massachusetts</strong> soldiers, was at Hatfield,<br />

and wrote to Major Pomeroy "that about 30 <strong>of</strong> the<br />

enemy had been discovered upon some part <strong>of</strong> Green River,<br />

about 8 miles <strong>from</strong> Deerfield.'' He ordered Major Pomeroy<br />

to immediately rally every man <strong>of</strong> his company, able to<br />

<strong>in</strong>arch and <strong>in</strong>arch with them ; and to take six days" pro-<br />

visions, add<strong>in</strong>g '" for <strong>in</strong> such a crowd as there will be at<br />

Deerfield, your men will be put to difficulty." * * " Your<br />

newtown (Southampton) must be cared for by your own<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers, I mean the <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the town. Men are hourly ex-<br />

pected also <strong>from</strong> Connecticut, who may supply their places.<br />
