was voted for defray<strong>in</strong>g the charge <strong>of</strong> school<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

previous w<strong>in</strong>ter. It is probable that the school was kept<br />

at one <strong>of</strong> the farm-houses, as no school-house was built <strong>in</strong><br />

that vic<strong>in</strong>ity till 1772.<br />

Southampton made In September <strong>of</strong> the same year, the quesa<br />

Prec<strong>in</strong>ct.<br />

-fcion <strong>of</strong> Sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f the new town, " as a dis-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ct and separate prec<strong>in</strong>ct, so that by con-<br />

sent <strong>of</strong> the General Court they might be under a capacity<br />

to carry on the worship <strong>of</strong> God among themselves," came<br />

before the town. It was presented by an article <strong>in</strong> the<br />

warrant, <strong>in</strong> which the bounds <strong>of</strong> the proposed district were<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itely def<strong>in</strong>ed. After suitable consideration, the re-<br />

quest was granted, though the consent <strong>of</strong> the Legislature<br />

was not obta<strong>in</strong>ed till two years afterwards. In September,<br />

1741, the new prec<strong>in</strong>ct was organized under an act <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>corporation.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the succeed<strong>in</strong>g ten years <strong>Northampton</strong><br />

was divided <strong>in</strong>to two prec<strong>in</strong>cts or parishes, each under the<br />

care <strong>of</strong> the m<strong>in</strong>ister selected by the residents there<strong>in</strong>. In<br />

all other matters the two villages were under the jurisdiction<br />

<strong>of</strong> the old town, and so cont<strong>in</strong>ued till Southampton<br />

assumed municipal responsibilities for <strong>its</strong>elf.
