regiment was mustered out, lie was appointed assistant surgeon<br />

of the 2nd regiment R. I. vol., and ^vas subsequently<br />

promoted to the office of surgeon, serving in that capacity- and<br />

as brigade operating surgeon in the 4th and 6th army corps,<br />

participating in the battles at Yorktown, Mechanicsville,Gaines<br />

Mill, Fair Oaks, Seven Pines, Melvin Hill, Antietam, Freder-<br />

icksburgh, Wilderness, Gett^-sburgh, Mine Run, Rappahannock,<br />

Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, Hanover Junction, and other<br />

engagements. At the close of the war, he resumed the<br />

practice of his profession in Providence. He was admitted to<br />

the R. I. state medical society and to the Providence medical<br />

association in 1860, and was president of the latter from March<br />

7, 1870, to March 4, 1872. He was appointed physician of the<br />

R. 1. state prison, July 14. 1868, and continued to fill that position<br />

until the removal of that institution from Providence in<br />

1878. He has been U. S. examining surgeon of pensions tw^en-<br />

tj^-fi.ve 3^ears, having been appointed in 1868. He was surgeon<br />

of the R. I. hospital twent}^ years, receiving his appointment at<br />

the opening of thatjinstitution in 1838, and resigning in 1888.<br />

He was six j^ears a member and president of the board of examiners<br />

of l-^J. I. state medical society'-. He is consulting surgeon<br />

of the R. I. hospital, Butler hospital for the insane, and<br />

St. Elizabeth's Home. He has been closely identified with the<br />

state militia and national guards, having been brigade sur-<br />

geon for several j^ears. On the re-organization of the state<br />

militia he was made medical director, and served in tliatcapacit}^<br />

for thirteen years. He was the first surgeon of the Grand<br />

Army of the Republic in the state, and was for several years<br />

medical director. He married Imogene Mathews, daughter of<br />

Bradford N. and Harriet (Rogers) Mathews, April 17, 1871, in<br />

Providence, wliere they reside. They only had,<br />
