married Tbomas Paine. He was a sea captain and commanded<br />

the frii^ate Pearl against the pirates of the West Indies. He<br />

died in 1715, and his \vife Mar^^ died in 1717. No children.<br />

"Whereas, I am inforiued there are several pirates that have<br />

most bar])arously murthurecl divers of his Majesty's subjects,<br />

robbing others and taking several vessels, cursing the King,<br />

and not so much as pretending to l>elong to an}" Prince, or to<br />

have any commission of ^var. These are therefore to author-<br />

ize Capt. Thomas Paine, commander of the Frigate Pearl, to<br />

seize the said pirates, and to take, kill and destroy the said ])irates<br />

and their ships, provided they resist and cannot be<br />

brought in, for doing which this sliall be your warraiii. I<br />

likewise, hereby further assure you iind yoiu- men, that for<br />

such service you shall have all the favor the}- can exj)ect, or 1<br />

HI. John Carr (28) born in Newport, R. L, about 16(54, mar-<br />

ried Waite East(jn, daughter of Peter Eastern, and grand<br />

daughter of Gov. Nicholas Easton. vShe was born in Newport<br />

Nov. 5, 16(58 and died in August, 1725, and was buried in the<br />

family burying ground beside her husband. He lived in New-<br />

port, and in 1700 lie was granted the privilege of running a<br />

ferry between Ne\v"port and Jamestt>wn, and this franchise<br />

remained in the family for one hundred and seventy years. He<br />

died in 1714, and his estate was settled l)yhis son Samuel, as<br />

heir to his ])roperty, according to the wishes of his father as<br />

ft)llows:<br />
