III., his parents having removed there when he was a child. He married (i) 23 Feb., 1873, Olive
(dau. of Patrick and Mary) Haudright. She died 27 Jan., 1877. He married (2) 24 Feb., 18S1,
Elizabeth Katharine (dau. of John McClellan and Elizabeth Nancy) Brown. He is a farmer and
stock raiser. Res. (1885) on his farm near Virden, Macoupin Co., 111.

Co., 111., 30 Dec, 1850. His boyhood and youth were passed upon the farm near Auburn, Sangamon
Co., 111., where his father has resided since 1855. ^'^ education, begun at the country
school near his home, was supplemented by a classical course at Shurtleff College, at Alton, where
he graduated with class honors in 1876. He was chosen by the faculty of Shurtleff College to
represent that institution at the inter-collegiate contest of the State of Illinois, held at Jacksonville
in 1875, in which he won second honors. He also received the Mills prize medal awarded for
excellence in oratory on the day of his graduation. He taught school several terms, after which
he removed to Springfield, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in June, 1880. During this
