died in 1720. He died Jan. 25, 1743-44, and was buried in the old Kickemuit<br />
Cemetery, in what is now Warren, R. I. He was a resident <strong>of</strong> Rehoboth,<br />
Mass., and also probably <strong>of</strong> both Seekonk and <strong>Swansea</strong>. His children,<br />
all born in Rehoboth, Mass., were; Samuel, born June 9, 1683; James,<br />
March 18, 1684-85; Elizabeth, May 5, 1689; and Amos, Feb. 18, 1699.<br />
(III) James Mason, born March 18, 1684-8.5, in Rehoboth, Mass.,<br />
married (first) July 30, 1713, Rose, born May 30, 1692, in <strong>Swansea</strong>, Mass.,<br />
daughter <strong>of</strong> Richard and Mary (BuUock) Hale. She died March 7, 1748,<br />
and he married (second) Jan. 11, 1750, Mrs. Hannah Holden, <strong>of</strong> Warwick,<br />
R. I., probably widow <strong>of</strong> John Holden and daughter <strong>of</strong> Thomas and Mary<br />
(Green) Fry. Mr. Mason hved in <strong>Swansea</strong>, in <strong>Massachusetts</strong> Bay Colony,<br />
but some few years before his death the section <strong>of</strong> the town in which he<br />
resided was given to Rhode Island. His will is dated in Warren, R. I., his<br />
death occurred in 1755. The children <strong>of</strong> James and Rose (Hale) Mason, all<br />
born in <strong>Swansea</strong>, were: Nathaniel, born April 6, 1714 (died March 31,<br />
1716); EHzabeth, March 4, 1716 (died in infancy); Ann, March 4, 1716<br />
(died June 29, 1748); Ehzabeth, July 25, 1718; James, March 13, 1720;<br />
Hannah, Sept. 22, 1721; John, Sept. 28, 1723; Rose, Feb. 19, 1725-26;<br />
Mary, March 5, 1730.<br />
(IV) John Mason, born Sept. 28, 1723, in <strong>Swansea</strong>, Mass., married<br />
April 19, 1743, Sarah Gardner, born about 1726 in <strong>Swansea</strong>, daughter <strong>of</strong><br />
Samuel and Sarah (Smith) Gardner. Mr. Mason hved at Touisset Neck,<br />
in <strong>Swansea</strong> (but now in Warren, R. I.) He died Nov. 27, 1805. His wife<br />
died Feb. 29, 1808. Their children were: Gardner, born Aug. 28, 1744;<br />
Edward, born June 22, 1746, who died Nov. 27, 1768; Haile, born Nov.<br />
12, 1748, who died in Calcutta aged forty; Holden, born Feb. 18, 1750;<br />
Rose, born Oct. 2, 1752, who died Feb. 13, 1822; Hannah, born Feb. 9,<br />
1755, who died Dec. 28, 1826; Samuel born Oct. 2, 1757; Sarah, born<br />
June 1, 1759; Mary, born about 1762, who died Jan. 16, 1803; and Patience,<br />
born about 1765, who died Feb. 18, 1847.<br />
(V) Samuel Mason (2), born Oct. 2, 1757, in Warren, R. I., married<br />
May 12, 1782, Hannah Anthony, born Feb. 2, 1762, daughter <strong>of</strong> Job and<br />
Mary (Gardner) Anthony. She died Aug. 14, 1830. He died Oct. 27, 1846.<br />
Their children were: Lydia, born June 15, 1783, died May 15, 1860; Mary,<br />
born July 10, 1785, married Joseph Cole Dec. 14, 1806; Haile was born<br />
March 13, 1787; Esther, born April 7, 1789, married Hanan Wilbur (born<br />
Aug. 5, 1785, died Sept. 17, 1845; she died April 11, 1866); Sarah was born<br />
Sept. 2, 1790; Job Anthony, born Nov. 16, 1792, died June 23, 1855;<br />
Joanna, born Nov. 4, 1794, died July 27, 1856; Aimira, 1798, died March<br />
29, 1870; John was born May 31, 1800; Samuel born Sept. 8, 1802, died<br />
May 22, 1803; Zephaniah S. was born Jan. 27, 1804; Samuel (2) was born<br />
April 22, 1809.<br />
(VI) Zephaniah S. Mason, born Jan. 27, 1804, died Nov. 11, 1844.<br />
On Dec. 18, 1828, he married Susan Vinnicum, and they had three children:<br />
William, born June 5, 1831; Ann Frances, born Nov. 14, 1834; and<br />
CaroUne Cole, born Dec. 12, 1839 (married Dec. 11, 1864, Henry Augustus<br />
Gardner).<br />
Pearse Family<br />
The Pearse family is both ancient and historic in the annals <strong>of</strong> England,<br />
the lineage <strong>of</strong> Richard Pearse, the immigrant ancestor <strong>of</strong> the New England<br />
family being traced to the time <strong>of</strong> Alfred the Great. In later times were<br />
Peter Percy, standard bearer <strong>of</strong> Richard III, at the battle <strong>of</strong> Bosworth<br />
Field (1485), and Richard Percy, the founder <strong>of</strong> Pearce Hall.<br />
