seems to be known more than that he died. This family came from Somersetshire,<br />

England, probably being <strong>of</strong> Wales only a short time. William<br />

appears <strong>of</strong> record at Newport, R. I., in 1659, when admitted a freeman <strong>of</strong><br />

the colony. He became an early settler in the Shawomet Purchase or<br />

Shawomet Lands, which included that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swansea</strong> which, in 1790,<br />

became the town <strong>of</strong> Somerset. Mr. Slade located in <strong>Swansea</strong> as early as<br />

1680, the year <strong>of</strong> the beginning <strong>of</strong> the first record book, and the meetings <strong>of</strong><br />

the proprietors were held at his house after their discontinuance at<br />

Plymouth, in 1677. Mr. Slade was a large landholder, his possessions<br />

including the ferry across Taunton River which took his name, "Slade's<br />

Ferry," and which remained in the family until the river was bridged in<br />

1876, and it was last operated by William L. and Jonathan Slade. Mr.<br />

Slade married Sarah, daughter <strong>of</strong> Rev. Obadiah Holmes <strong>of</strong> Rehoboth. He<br />

died March 30, 1729, at the age <strong>of</strong> sixty-seven years; Sarah, his widow<br />

died Sept. 10, 1761, aged ninety-seven, and her descendants numbered, at<br />

that time, 435. Of their ten children three were sons—Jonathan, Edward,<br />

and WiUiam. Children are recorded as follows: Mary, born in May, 1689;<br />

William, born in 1692; Edward, bom June 14, 1694; E^zabeth, born Dec.<br />

2, 1695; Hannah, born July 15, 1697; Martha, bom Feb. 27, 1699;<br />

Sarah; Phebe, bom Sept. 25, 1701; Jonathan, born Aug. 3, 1703 (died<br />

aged about eighteen); Lydia, born Oct. 8, 1706.<br />

(II) Edward Slade, son <strong>of</strong> William, born June 14, 1694, married<br />

(first) in 1717 Elizabeth Anthony, (second) Dec. 6, 1720, Phebe, daughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Samuel and Sarah (Sherman) Chase, and (third) Deborah Buffum.<br />

They were members <strong>of</strong> the Society <strong>of</strong> Friends. There was one child by the<br />

first marriage, William, born Sept. 25, 1718; by the second union there<br />

were: Samuel, born Sept. 26, 1721; Elizabeth, born April 29, 1723; Joseph,<br />

born Nov. 16, 1724; Sarah, born in February, 1726; and by the thurd:<br />

Edward, Jr. bora Nov. 11, 1728; Philip, born Sept, 19, 1730; Phebe, born<br />

July 4, 1737; and Mercy, born in 1744.<br />

(III) Samuel Slade, son <strong>of</strong> Edward and Phebe, born 26th <strong>of</strong> 9th<br />

month, 1721, married Mercy, bom 3d <strong>of</strong> 5th month 1723, in Salem, Mass.,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Jonathan and Mercy BuflFum. Their children, all born in<br />

<strong>Swansea</strong>, were: Jonathan, bom 13th <strong>of</strong> 6th month, 1744; Robert, born 7th<br />

<strong>of</strong> 8th month, 1746; Henry, born 20th <strong>of</strong> 6th month, 1748; Edward, bom<br />

27th <strong>of</strong> 7th month, 1749; Samuel, born 20th <strong>of</strong> 11th month, 1752; Caleb,<br />

born 24th <strong>of</strong> 4th month, 1755; Buffum, born 31st <strong>of</strong> 3d month, 1757;<br />

William, bom 18th <strong>of</strong> 8th month, 1759; and Benjamin, bom 14th <strong>of</strong> 1st<br />

month, 1762. The father <strong>of</strong> these received from his uncle, Capt. Jonathan<br />

Slade, who died without issue, the ferry alluded to in the foregoing. This<br />

he operated and also was engaged in agricultural pursuits and blacksmi thing.<br />

Mrs. Slade died 18th <strong>of</strong> 9th month, 1797.<br />

(IV) Jonathan Slade, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel and Mercy, born 13th <strong>of</strong> 6th<br />

month, 1744, in <strong>Swansea</strong>, Mass., married Mary, bom 15th <strong>of</strong> 12th month,<br />

1746, in <strong>Swansea</strong>, daughter <strong>of</strong> Daniel Chase and his wife Mary. They<br />

lived in <strong>Swansea</strong>, where their children were born. Mr. Slade died 16th <strong>of</strong><br />

11th month, 1811 ; Mrs. Slade died 7th <strong>of</strong> 9th month, 1814. Their children<br />

were: Jonathan, born 10th <strong>of</strong> 2d month, 1768, (died 8th <strong>of</strong> 12th month,<br />

1797); Mercy, bom 31st <strong>of</strong> 6th month, 1770; Mary, bom 15th <strong>of</strong> 4th<br />

month, 1772; Anna, bom 20th <strong>of</strong> 1st month, 1775, (died 19th <strong>of</strong> 5th month,<br />

1805); Patience, bom 5th <strong>of</strong> 5th month, 1777 (died 26th <strong>of</strong> 10th month,<br />

1798); William, born 4th <strong>of</strong> 6th month, 1780; Nathan, bom 10th <strong>of</strong> 2d<br />

month, 1783; Phebe, born 15th <strong>of</strong> 5th month, 1785; Hannah, born 18th<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1st month, 1788, (died 23d <strong>of</strong> 5th month, 1805) ; and Lydia, born 3d <strong>of</strong><br />

4th month, 1791, (died 26th <strong>of</strong> 10th month, 1804).<br />

(V) William Slade, son <strong>of</strong> Jonathan and Mary, bom 4th <strong>of</strong> 6th<br />

month, 1780, in <strong>Swansea</strong>, Mass., married Phebe, born 21st <strong>of</strong> 8th month,
