the General Court decreed that the Widow Luther have the balance <strong>of</strong> her<br />
husband's wages according to sea custom, after allowing to the merchants<br />
what they had paid for the redemption <strong>of</strong> her son. This act no doubt had<br />
reference to John Luther.<br />
Through Samuel and Hezekiah Luther, sons <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, have<br />
descended the Luthers <strong>of</strong> the territory to which we have alluded. Of<br />
these Samuel was born in 1638, probably in Bo ston or vicinity. He is<br />
referred to as <strong>of</strong> Rehoboth, Feb. 27, 1661. On Oct. 19, 1672, he made a<br />
claim or demand for his father's purchase in Taunton. In the year 1685<br />
Samuel Luther succeeded Rev. John Miles as Elder <strong>of</strong> the Baptist Church<br />
in <strong>Swansea</strong>, Mr. Miles having died in 1683. Mr. Luther is referred to as Rev.<br />
Capt. Samuel Luther. He continued in charge <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swansea</strong> Church for<br />
thirty-two years. He died Dec. 20, 1716, and was buried in the Kickemuit<br />
Cemetery, in what is now Warren, R. I., where also rests the remains <strong>of</strong><br />
his brother Hezekiah, who died July 28, 1723, aged eighty-three years. The<br />
children <strong>of</strong> Elder Samuel Luther, according to Rehoboth town records,<br />
were: Samuel, Theophilus, and Mary; and in the father's will are men-<br />
tioned also :<br />
Joshua, Ebenezer, Susannah, Mehitabel, and Martha, Joanna<br />
m. Nathaniel Wilmarth May 27, 1704, d. May 31, 1706.<br />
(II) Hezekiah Luther, son <strong>of</strong> Capt. John, the settler, born in 1640,<br />
probably in Taunton, died July 23, 1723, aged 83. He married (first) Nov.<br />
30, 1661, Elizabeth, in Dorchester, Mass., and (second) Sarah Butterworth,<br />
who died Aug. 22, 1722. His children were: John, born in 1663; Nathaniel,<br />
in 1664 (by the first union); Joseph, Feb. 12, 1669; EUzabeth, Dec.<br />
29, 1671; Edward, April 27, 1674; Hezekiah, Aug. 27, 1676; and Hannah<br />
(by the second union). The father was a carpenter and hved in <strong>Swansea</strong>.<br />
(III) Lieut. Hezekiah Luther, son <strong>of</strong> Hezekiah, born Aug. 27, 1676,<br />
was married March 23, 1704, to Martha Gardner, and died Oct 27,<br />
1763, survived by his wife only until Nov. 2, 1763. Their children, all born<br />
in <strong>Swansea</strong>, were: Robert, born Dec. 13, 1704; Levi, Aug. 4, 1706; Esek,<br />
Dec. 6, 1708; Constant, Oct. 4, 1711; Lydia, Sept. 19, 1714; Simeon, May<br />
19, 1717; Edward, Feb. 15, 1719; Martha, Nov. 28, 1721; Sarah, Aug. 2,<br />
1724; Avis, Dec. 17, 1726; Hezekiah, Feb. 19, 1728; and Calvin, Aug. 9,<br />
1731.<br />
(IV) Edward Luther, son <strong>of</strong> Lieut. Hezekiah, born Feb. 15, 1719,<br />
married March 13, 1745, Sarah Sweet, <strong>of</strong> Prudence, R. I., and died March<br />
7, 1776. Their children, all born in <strong>Swansea</strong>, were: James, born Feb. 19,<br />
1747; Sarah, May 10, 1748; Abner, June 27, 1750; Martha, Oct. 21, 1752;<br />
Edward, Nov. 10, 1754; Gardner, EUzabeth, and Sweet, triplets, Feb. 19,<br />
1757; Peleg, Jan. 2, 1760; Freelove, March 15, 1762; Samuel, April 26,<br />
1764; and Elizabeth, April 15, 1766.<br />
(V) Samuel Luther, son <strong>of</strong> Edward, bom April 26, 1764, died Nov.<br />
15, 1835. He married Rebekah Brown, born April 30, 1763, died April 10,<br />
1813, daughter <strong>of</strong> Aaron and Catherine (Bell) Brown, and their children<br />
were: Joseph Gardner, born Dec. 31, 1789, is mentioned below; Thomas<br />
Sweet, born March 14, 1792, married Elizabeth A. Taylor, and had two<br />
children, Virginia B., and Georgia Sweet, both <strong>of</strong> whom are deceased; John<br />
Brown, born Oct. 16, 1794; married Lydia Luther, and died Feb. 21, 1823;<br />
(they had one son, John B., born Dec. 19, 1822, died March 24, 1910,<br />
unmarried); Samuel Sweet, born Feb. 14, 1799, died Oct. 18, 1823.<br />
Samuel Luther was a sea captain. His fraternal relations were with the<br />
Masons, affiliating with the lodge at Warren, Rhode Islemd.<br />
(VI) Joseph Gardner Luther, son <strong>of</strong> Samuel, born Dec. 31, 1789,<br />
died June 13, 1857. March 26, 1821, he married in <strong>Swansea</strong>, Tamer Luther,<br />
born Dec. 2, 1800, died Sept. 24, 1892, daughter <strong>of</strong> (VI) James and Tamer<br />
(Hale) Mason Luther, granddaughter <strong>of</strong> (V) James and Mercy (Cole)<br />
Chase Luther, great granddaughter <strong>of</strong> (IV) James and Martha (Slade)
