died Feb. 20, 1724. Married second at <strong>Swansea</strong> Dec. 3, 1724 Elizabeth<br />

Thomas. He died at <strong>Swansea</strong> 1769. She died Nov. 21, 1770.<br />

(V) Hezekiah b. at <strong>Swansea</strong> Dec. 5, 1739. Married at <strong>Swansea</strong> June<br />

21, 1767, Mary Luther b. Nov. 29, 1749. She was the daughter <strong>of</strong> John and<br />

Hannah (Anthony, widow <strong>of</strong> Job) Luther. She died Oct. 8, 1779. He<br />

married 2nd Mary Cole. She died Oct. 3, 1824. He died May 20, 1820.<br />

(V) Hezekiah b. at <strong>Swansea</strong> January 20, 1768, m. Feb. 19, 1797, Mima<br />

Phinney daughter <strong>of</strong> Ehsha and Rebecca (Peck) Phinney b. March 29,<br />

1773. He died at <strong>Swansea</strong> January 16, 1842. She died at <strong>Swansea</strong> Dec. 19<br />

Joseph Gardner Luther<br />

Joseph Gardner Luther, one <strong>of</strong> the best known <strong>citizen</strong>s <strong>of</strong> this Town,<br />

where for half a century he was engaged in a mercantile business, and where<br />

he has given able service as a town <strong>of</strong>ficial having served also as a Justice<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Peace, is a descendant in the seventh generation from Capt John<br />

Luther, an early settler <strong>of</strong> Taunton, Mass. And on the maternal side, his<br />

lineage is from John Howland <strong>of</strong> the "Mayflower" company as follows:<br />

John and EUzabeth (Tilley) Howland; Jonathan and Hannah (Howland)<br />

Bosworth; Jonathan Jr. and Sarah (Round) Bosworth; Ichabod and Mary<br />

(Bowen) Bosworth; John and Bethiah (Bosworth) Hale; James and Tamer<br />

(Hale) Mason Luther; and Joseph G. and Tamer (Luther) Luther.<br />

(1) The name Luther has been a prominent one, and the family was<br />

numerous in the towns created out <strong>of</strong> Ancient Rehoboth, and in territory<br />

near by since the early settlement here—since the coming <strong>of</strong> John Luther<br />

to Taunton, 1637, where he was one <strong>of</strong> the original proprietors. One<br />

family record sets forth that he was a native <strong>of</strong> Germany and came to<br />

Boston in 1635. Another account states that he was a native <strong>of</strong> Dorset,<br />

England, and came to America in 1636, and in 1639 was a purchaser <strong>of</strong><br />

Taunton, Mass. He and some <strong>of</strong> his men were killed by the Indiana in<br />

1644, while on a trading voyage in Delaware bay. And on May 22, 1646,<br />
