death he became a member <strong>of</strong> the household <strong>of</strong> his son Charles A., and<br />
there, after a gradual dechne, passed away, May 19, 1907, in his ninetieth<br />
year. He kept informed on all current topics, and, with a remarkable<br />
memory, recalled historical facts and statistics with wonderful accuracy.<br />
He was a member <strong>of</strong> the American Peace Society, and kept abreast <strong>of</strong> the<br />
progress <strong>of</strong> peace and arbitration movements in all parts <strong>of</strong> the world.<br />
To the Rev. Obadiah and Esther Taber (Freeborn) Chace, were born<br />
four children, as follows: Charles Anthony, born Dec. 22, 1846; Emma<br />
Rogers, born May 22, 1853, and died Jan. 6, 1906; Walter Freeborn, born<br />
Feb. 28, 1858; and George Mahlon, born April 3, 1864.<br />
In 1898, Mr. Chace published a book <strong>of</strong> poems, dedicated "To<br />
Augustine Jones, Principal <strong>of</strong> Friends School, Providence, R. I., where I<br />
first learned to frame words in Metre." (A copy <strong>of</strong> this work may be<br />
found in the <strong>Swansea</strong> Public Library).<br />
Charles Anthony Chace, son <strong>of</strong> the Rev. Obadiah and Esther Taber<br />
(Freeborn) Chace, born Dec. 22, 1846, was educated in the schools <strong>of</strong><br />
Warren, R. I., and at the Friends' School, Providence. For three winters<br />
he taught school, and in 1879 moved to the Abner Slade farm, <strong>Swansea</strong>,<br />
residing there until 1900, when he built his present beautiful residence,<br />
" Wannamoiset, " at South <strong>Swansea</strong>. His son Benjamin Slade Chace now<br />
resides on the Slade farm. For many years, Mr. Chace and his sons erected<br />
windmills, tanks, and silos; and in 1902, they incorporated the New<br />
England Tank and Tower Co., Mr. Warren O. Chace taking charge <strong>of</strong> the<br />
factory at Everett, Mass. Mr. Chace was a Republican previous to 1884,<br />
when he joined the Prohibition party, becoming one <strong>of</strong> its active and<br />
leading members. He has been for many years a member <strong>of</strong> the State<br />
Committee, has served as a delegate from <strong>Massachusetts</strong> to three Presidential<br />
Conventions, has been a candidate on the State and local ticket<br />
several times. For seven years he served his town as a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />
school board; and he is a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Massachusetts</strong> Sunday School<br />
Association.<br />
Sept. 26, 1872, in the Friends' meeting-house, Mr. Chace married<br />
Adeline Frances Slade, adopted daughter <strong>of</strong> Abner Slade <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swansea</strong>, <strong>of</strong><br />
whom a sketch may be found in this volume. Mr. and Mrs. Charles A.<br />
Chace have had children as follows: Benjamin Slade, bom Jan. 11, 1875;<br />
Harold Anthony, born Aug. 13, 1876, who died Feb. 28, 1878; Arthur<br />
Freeborn, born May 13, 1879; Warren Obadiah, born June 12, 1882; and<br />
Sarah Slade, bom April 22, 1889. Mr. and Mrs. Chace are life members<br />
<strong>of</strong> the American Peace Society.<br />
Benjamin Slade Chace, son <strong>of</strong> Charles Anthony and AdeUne Frances<br />
(Slade) Chace, was born Jan. 11, 1875, married June 19, 1895, to Carrie<br />
EsteUe Mosher, daughter <strong>of</strong> Edgar D. Mosher <strong>of</strong> Mapleton, N. Y. and they<br />
have had six children: Fenton Mosher, born Aug. 11, 1896; Harold Dean,<br />
Dec. 22, 1898; Clyde Fuller, Aug. 6, 1908; Carol Ehzabeth, Feb. 21, 1910;<br />
Beryl, March 8, 1911 (died March 28, 1911) and RusseU Slade, Oct. 8,<br />
1912. Mr. Chace hves upon his father's farm, and is ably managing the<br />
extensive work there.<br />
Arthur Freeborn Chace, M. D., son <strong>of</strong> Charles Anthony and Adeline<br />
Frances (Slade) Chace, was bom May 13, 1879, educated at Oakwood<br />
Seminary, Union Springs, N. Y., Earlham College, Richmond, Ind., from<br />
which he received the degree <strong>of</strong> A. B., and also graduated from Harvard<br />
with the degree <strong>of</strong> A. B., and from the College <strong>of</strong> Physicians and Surgeons<br />
<strong>of</strong> New York City with the degree <strong>of</strong> M. D. He was advanced rapidly in<br />
his pr<strong>of</strong>ession, and is secretary and assistant treasurer <strong>of</strong> the New York<br />
Post-Graduate Hospital, and a member <strong>of</strong> its board <strong>of</strong> trustees. Dr. Chace<br />
married Nov. 2, 1911, Kathleen Sterling Fletcher, daughter <strong>of</strong> James<br />
Fletcher Jr. <strong>of</strong> New York. Their children are Arthur F. Jr., Dec. 12, 1913,
