<strong>the</strong> business alone, taking a partner in 1873, and organizing<br />

<strong>the</strong> business into a joint stock company in 1882. The <strong>Clark</strong><br />

& Chaplin Ice Co., <strong>of</strong> which he is <strong>the</strong> president, represents<br />

a large and well-established business, cutting, storing, and<br />

shipping ice in large quantities, in addition to <strong>the</strong> local city<br />

trade. He has also been connected with o<strong>the</strong>r business en-<br />

terprises. He was treasurer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Leeds & <strong>Farmington</strong> R.<br />

R. Co. from December, 1869,<br />

until it was sold to <strong>the</strong> Maine<br />

Central R. R. ; afterward a director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Portland &<br />

Ogdensburg R. R. in 1872, while <strong>the</strong> road was being con-<br />

structed through tlie mountains and until it was completed<br />

and <strong>the</strong> cars were running through Crawford Notch, resigning<br />

in 1879. In 1873 he was chosen a director, and afterwards<br />

president, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Portland Water Company, which position<br />

he now occupies."<br />
