CLINTON S. MAUPIN, COL. M.D. (RET)<br />

One time kMwn as the DEAN of<br />

NUCLEAR MEDICINE oftbe U. S. ARMY<br />

MEDICAL CORPS, died at his home in<br />

Waurika. Okla. on Sunday. Oct. 2, 1m,<br />

after a year's illness. He died and lived the<br />

life of a true soldier. He is survived by his<br />

wile. Rebecca Maupin; twosons, Terrance<br />

and Bill, both of Las Vegas, Nevada and<br />

one daughter, Norilla Plaw, Fountain<br />

Valley, calif. Col. Maupin was very proud<br />

of his six grandchildren.<br />

Col . Maupin was born Jan. 13, 1908, graduating<br />

from Waurika HighSchool in 19216;<br />

then in 1934 received two B.S. degrees<br />

from the University of Oklahoma, in<br />

mathematics and science. 'Iben in 1937,<br />

served his residency at the University of<br />

Oklahoma Hospital, and entered the Army<br />

in 1938. After being captured on Bataan<br />

with Hospital No. 2 personnel, survived the<br />

P .O.W. camps that followed, including the<br />

horrible trials of the Oryoku Maru sinking,<br />

and the replacement vessel which was<br />

sunk in Tatao, Famcsa harbour, and then<br />

nearly dying of exposure OIl the way to<br />

Mukden during the extreme cold of winter<br />

with practically no clothes for keeping the<br />

body warm.<br />

While on the staff of the Surgeon General<br />

of the U. S. Anny. Col. Maupin was the<br />

Special Auistant to the SUrgeon General<br />

in the Field of Nuclear Medicine. Col.<br />

Maupin, M.D. was the only medical officer<br />

to see aU the atomic bombs detonated,<br />

with the exception of the first three, the<br />

last two being Hiro6bima and Nagasaki.<br />

Col. Maupin was a LIFE member of the<br />

American <strong>Defenders</strong> of Bataan and<br />

Corregidor . . .<br />

BAKER, died of service connected heart<br />

failure on SEPT. 28, Hm, in Mideat City,<br />

OKLA.<br />

He was given full military rites at the<br />

cemetery in Lexington, Okla. on Sept. 30,<br />

1m. He was a member of the 58th CA on<br />

Corregidoc and finished the war in OMINE<br />

MAcm P .O.W. Camp in Japan, where be<br />

worked in the coal mine for seven days per<br />

week ... He was survived by his wife,<br />

Mrs. Jeue Currier, 410 W. Kelvin Court,<br />

Spring Hill, Fla. 33512 died while attending<br />

died in Dec. 1m at the age of 60. Stan was<br />

59, of 1000 Coolidge Avenue was conducted<br />

at 10 a.m. Monday in the Kuecks-Woolsey<br />

Funeral Home.<br />

Mr. Johns died unexpectedly in his home<br />

at 12:011 p.m . July 30, 1m.<br />

Bom at Pekin July 31, 1918. he was a son<br />

of John and Lillie Stufflebeam Johns. His<br />

marriage to Vicki CUicio 0CCUI'T'ed. here<br />

July 5, 1947.<br />

A United States Army veteran of World<br />

War II, Mr. Johns was a survivor of the<br />

infamous Bataan Death March and was a<br />

prisoner of war for three and one-half<br />

years.<br />

He had been employed as an electrician<br />

in Caterpillar Tractor Company's East<br />

Peoria plant for 30 years.<br />

Surviving are his wfie; one son, Robert<br />

G. Johns, Jr., of Peoriaand one brother,<br />

Earl.<br />

died Nov. 11, 1m at the age of 63 of a heart<br />

attack. AI was from 200th CAC.<br />

34 Mountain View Ave., Hurley, died at her<br />

home. She was the wife of National<br />

Secretary AlexBenlshake.<br />

Born in West Shokan, abe was the<br />

daughter of the late Albert and Jennie<br />

_North.<br />

Mrs. Beniabake was employed as<br />

manager of the Kinglton Tnllt Co., Hurley<br />

Branch. Sbe was a member of the Hurley<br />

Reformed Church, the Hurley Fire Co.<br />

Auxiliary, the Hurley Republican Club, the<br />

Am and the American Women Banker's<br />

Auoctation. She was treasurer 01 the<br />

COL. CHAST AINE<br />

Services for Col. Ben H. Chastaine<br />

(USA-ReL) , a survivor of a Japanese POW<br />

camp in the <strong>Philippine</strong>s in World War II,<br />

was held at Mt. LebaDOn Christian Church,<br />

Cedar Boulevard and HoUycrest Drive,<br />

Mt. Lebanon.<br />

Col. Chastaine, 88, of 55 Highland Road,<br />

Mt. Lebanon, died Saturday (Jan. 21) in<br />

the Baptist Nursing Center of Mt.<br />

Lebanon.<br />

A native of Tennessee. he was a veteran<br />

of both world wars. He was a recipient ol<br />

the Silver Star, Legion of Merit and<br />

French Croix de Guerre.<br />

Although he was over the age for active<br />

military duty when the United States<br />

entered World War 11, he responded to a<br />

request to serve from Gen. Douglas<br />

MacArthur and was stationed on the<br />

Island of Mindanao in the <strong>Philippine</strong>s at<br />

the time of the faU of Sataan and<br />

Corregidor to the Japanese.<br />

He and aU senior officers in the Pacific<br />

area, were forced to surrender. Col.<br />

Cbastaine spent three and a half yean as a<br />

prisoner of war under the Japanese.<br />

Upon his retinment after 35 years'<br />

service in the anny in 1949. he worked in<br />

vsrious capaclHes for Ryan Homes Ioc.<br />

Col . Chutaine was a charter member of<br />

ML Lebanon Christian COOrch and served<br />

as chairman of the congregation, as a<br />

trustee andasa Bibleclass teAcher.<br />

He is survived by his wife, Mary<br />

Cbastaine; a daughter, Mrs. E .M. Ryan of<br />

Mt. Lebanon; a son, Richard W. McCan 01<br />

Upper S1. Clair; seven grandchildren and<br />

six great-grandchildren.<br />

Burial was in ArlingtDn NatiOD.lI Cemetery.<br />

LESLIE A. GILBERT<br />

GILBERT, Leslie A. - SS, of Roseburg<br />

died at a Roseburg hospital November 28,<br />

1m. He was born May 21 , 1922 at Yakima,<br />

Washington. He had lived in the Roseburg<br />

area for the past 21 years. He was overseas<br />

4 years and 4 months, during which time<br />

be was decorated with the Infantry Combat<br />

Badge, Silver Star Medal. Distinguished<br />

Unit Badge with 2 Oak Leaf<br />

Clusters, Purple Heart, American Defense<br />

Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, Asiatic<br />

Pacific Theater Ribbon with 1 Brooze Star.<br />

<strong>Philippine</strong> Defense Ribbon with 1 Bronze<br />

Star, W. W. II Victory Medal, American<br />

Defense Service Medal and the Good<br />

Conduct Medal. He was taken prisoner of<br />

war on April 8, 1942, and was sent to<br />

Mukden, Northern Japan totbecoalmiDM<br />

where he contacted TB while working<br />

there. He returned to the United States on<br />

October 25, 1945, and was separated from<br />

the service May 28, 1946. Survivors are his<br />

wife; Frances of Roseburg, 2 sons; Les,<br />

Jr., of Olympia, Washington, John, and 1<br />

daughter.<br />
