The first A.M. Meeting was a huge success since the sun came
out.
President Elect Bill opened the meeting
with a song by Chuck K., the Pledge
and contemplation at 7:45 a.m. He announced
that this was the first ever Brighton
Rotary meeting in the morning, but
was later corrected, because a few morning
meetings were held during the last
century! He also showed off his Australian
Rotary pin, a gift from DGE Ken
Hall from Australia, in honor of the fact
that it was dinner time…and summer… Bill Moehle
on the other side of the earth!
Bill let the Club know that Anna Gross, mother of new member
Barb Steklof, had passed away. Barb had lost her father just
last year, shortly after she joined our Club. Our new Sunshine
Committee Chair Janet Boccacino will send a card to Barb.
Next week we will be meeting at Hawthornes for dinner—Our
speaker will be Chris Hauf from the Rochester and Genesee Valley
Railroad Museum. This might be a perfect speaker for that
child or grandchild…or prospective Rotarian…that loves trains!!
Other upcoming events –Taste of Pittsford, sponsored by the
Pittsford Rotary, on March 17. The District 7120 Conference
and District Assembly are both in April.
Charles Chapin asked for nominations
for Paul Harris fellows and President Elect
Bill asked for nominations for Citizen of
the Year. The Citizen of the Year - Paul
Harris Dinner will be in May.
JUDGE KAREN MORRIS WAS THE GUEST SPEAKER.
She explained that she was writing a book on the Law and
Harry Potter. Her book has 99 chapters involving legal issues
that come up in the Harry Potter books.
She has a co-author lawyer in Arizona who is working with
her on the project.
Karen had to send the manuscript to the publisher who was
Harry Potter and the Law
Synopsis
Karen Morris has penned a
book entitled, Illuminations on
Law and Life from Harry Potter's
Adventures. At Brighton
Rotary's first breakfast meeting
this century, Karen gave us
some insights on her book and
J.K. Rowling's world of
witches and wizards.
Many of the twists and
turns in the Harry Poter series
incorporate the author's apparent
fascination with the law.
Karen's book identifies in
an entertaining and informative
way the events in the stories
that implicate the law, then explains the relevant law of our
society in an easy-to-understand manner, and discusses the application
of the law to the Harry Potter facts.
Among the legal issues addressed are identity theft, censorship,
performance enhancing drugs, Americans with Disabilities
Act, wills, restrictions on minors, child neglect, due process,
and much more. Dressed as one of the witches in the
story, Karen entertained us with examples from the book.
Clean Sweep
Brighton Town Council
Member, Louise Novros told us
about Brighton’s “Clean Sweep
Program” It will be a one day
town wide clean up. She is soliciting
the help of community
groups like Rotary.
There will be opportunities
for sponsors to provide the uniform
of the day—orange tee
shirts..
Look for future announcements
and plans. The date—
Saturday, April 26 to coincide
with Clean Sweeps in Rochester
and neighboring communities.
grateful and to Warner Bros to review for copyright issues. She
has not heard back yet but is very hopeful since someone else
had written an enclyopedia without notifying them and they are
now in court over it.
She is utterly fascinated with this topic and wore a witches hat
(she left her broom stick home I guess)
She related that each chapter had an issue of Law. She then
said she also added a chapter on a career in Law.
President-Elect Bill gave her a Rotary pen, too late to use to
write the book, and mug, so she can celebrate when the book is
finally published, and then Bill closed the meeting with a reminder
that our next meeting, on March 17, is a dinner meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Editor Pete Schwarz invited Past President and honorary member,
Scott Law (right) to the Geriatric Pilots luncheon and discovered
that they were a week too early. So instead they visited Past
President and now honorary member, Erik Szakos (left) at his
company, Atlas Tool. We are pleased to report that business is
good. Almost too good, according to Erik. He’s working long
hours—too long.
