Things we did:
The Bath and Penn Yan Clubs joined
forces to entertain their guests, Luis and
Gloria Palez and Peter Kaye with a tour of
the Corning Glass Center and a turkey
dinner at Jeff Kranz house. They toured
the Mennonite community and other
Yates County sites and lunched at Fox
River Vineyards with Rotarian owner,
Scott Osborn, complete with the best wine
tasting, ever. Noting that Gloria was doing
needlepoint in every spare minute,
Jeff took them to The Quilt Room, a Mennonite
quilt store with hundreds of quilts
in every variety. She was like a child in a
candy shop. They both loved it.
Bob and Pat Parker, Luis and Gloria
Palez’s second hosts, toured the famous
Wegmans supermarket, visited Rochester
General Hospital, met hosts Terry & Tim
Forward for lunch at East High School’s
culinary arts program restaurant, visited
The Program
For the past 36 years Brighton Rotary
Club and District 7120 has home hosted
over 442 Governors Elect and their
spouses from 37 countries worldwide. The
idea for the program was conceived in
1969 by PDG Milt Matthews, and has been
copied by many other Districts throughout
the United States.
Each Governor Elect guest is assigned
two Rotary hosts. Their first host meets
them at the airport on arrival and takes
them to their home. In the middle of the
stay, everyone meets at Brighton Rotary
Club’s Exchange Dinner. All the hosts
and guests have the opportunity to get acquainted
and share Rotary experiences.
When the meeting is over the guests leave
with their second host for the balance of
their stay.
The following pages include some of
this year’s activities. If you are an alumnus
Colin and Joy Thorn with Rochester Rotary
Past President, Barry Culhane of
Rochester Institute of Technology and a
meeting with the Pittsford branch of
Nothnagle Realtors. Both Colin and Joy’s
careers were in education and Colin is a
Rotary’s primary school with Rotarian
Paul Law, allowing Joy to observe
schoolchildren the same age as her students,
and attended a evening jazz concert
at Nazareth College. Dolly’s family
and their warm blooded guests braved the
cold to participate in the Winter Games at
Ganandogna. The men and kids retreated
to the warm pavilion before the dog sled
exhibition but Dolly and Joy shivered
through the presentation to watch the
fleet-footed canines race. Colin introduced
them to a variety of Australian
wines and Joy made their mouths water
Things we did
(Continued from page 2)
with the signature Australian dessert—
Pavlova. The Thorns left a lingering
sign of their visit, Dolly’s children now
say G’day every morning.
Kathleen and Tom Conroy took their
guest, Jane Bradford, to Niagara Falls
where (coming from the perpetually arid
continent) she had never seen so much
fresh water. “Jane was an incandescent
bright star in an otherwise dull January.”
Don & Fiona Whatham rode the train
up the beautiful Hudson River and Mohawk
River valleys from New York City
and were met by hosts PDG Glen and
Diana Balch. Glen and Diana had a
“Meet the Governor Elect” party (see
photo), spent Friday at Niagara Falls,
walking across the Rainbow Bridge into
Canada, and on Saturday toured the
Corning Glass Museum with DGE Eric
and Peggy Parker and their guests
Wayne & Gail Barrett. Don and Wayne
were thrilled that there was more to the
museum that cookware. The science and
technology section was fantastic. Don
and Fiona reported, “The snow was a
highlight of our visit.”
Martyn and Gloria Jensen were hosted
by Humble Herb MacDonell and his
wife Phyllis in their home in the woods
near Corning. Tours included the nearby
Corning Museum of Glass and the Rockwell
Museum of Western Art.
Reg & Wendy Ling brought a special
greeting and proclamation from the
Mayor of Winchester, England, to Brighton’s
Town Supervisor which was presented
at Brighton’s Town Board meeting.
Supervisor Frankel presented an
Exchange of Greetings to Reg to deliver
to his mayor. Hosts DGE Jim and Jane
Holden gave Reg the Canandaigua
Traveling Gavel for the start of its world
wide tour of Rotary Club. Reg has since
introduced it to RI President Carl during
his visit to Birmingham, England and
plans to bring it to Chicago to continue
its journey.
From Chandra & Meena Senan, “All
my hosts were wonderful people. They
have opened the door not only of their
houses but also their hearts. This is one
of the best opportunities to share
thoughts and gain more ideas about the
people.”
From Kishore and Padma Magdum,
“Thank you for your excellent arrangements.
Both hosts were fantastic. They
were hospitable, caring, and loveable.”
