Data Sources
Data for the “Human Health and Safety” section were derived from multiple sources. These
included:
• Population health databanks including the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System
(BRFSS), the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) and the United States
(U.S.) Census. Much of these data were gathered through the New Mexico Department
of Health, which has compiled the recent available data and presented it in summary
reports.
• Health reports published by New Mexico government departments and organizations
such as the New Mexico Tumor Registry and the University of New Mexico.
• Community studies by independent researchers or institutions such the Southwest
Research Information Center.
• Peer-reviewed scientific publications on special topics, such as studies examining the
health impacts of uranium mining on miners (e.g., Roscoe et al., 1995) or reviews of
toxicological impacts of radon (e.g., ATSDR, 1990).
