stands would contain large old trees with open branches and irregular crowns. The<br />
stands would have multiple canopy layers made up of various-aged trees. They<br />
would be well stocked with trees and contain standing dead and down trees.<br />
Lopping and Scattering<br />
Lopping logging debris and spreading it more or less evenly on the ground.<br />
Management Indicators Species (MIS)<br />
Plant or animal species selected in a planning process that are used to monitor the<br />
effects of planned management activities on populations of wildlife and fish,<br />
including those that are socially or economically important.<br />
Meadow<br />
An area of perennial, herbaceous vegetation, usually grass or grass-like. A natural<br />
opening in a forest, generally at higher elevations, that produces exceptional<br />
levels of herbaceous plants.<br />
Mechanical (treatment, activity)<br />
Vegetation management activities which are implemented with the use of<br />
mechanized equipment (i.e. chainsaws, etc.).<br />
Monitoring<br />
The sample collection and analysis of information regarding Forest Plan and<br />
project level management practices to determine how well objectives have been<br />
met as well as the effects of those management activities on the land and<br />
environment.<br />
Multi-storied Stands (Vegetation)<br />
Plant communities having two or more recognizable canopy layers or height<br />
levels.<br />
National <strong>Environmental</strong> Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA)<br />
An act declaring a national policy to encourage productive harmony between<br />
people and their environment; to promote efforts that will prevent or eliminate<br />
damage to the environment and the biosphere and simulate the health and welfare<br />
of people; to enrich the understanding of the ecological systems and natural<br />
resources important to the nation; and to establish a Council on <strong>Environmental</strong><br />
Quality.<br />
National Fire Management Analysis System (NFMAS)<br />
A broad umbrella process to help fire managers identify the most efficient fire<br />
program meeting the direction in the Forest Plan. This includes information for<br />
the planning record on program composition, annual programmed costs,<br />
emergency firefighting costs, expected resource impacts, and net value change.<br />
National Forest Management Act (NFMA)<br />
A law passed in 1976 amending the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources<br />
Planning Act that requires the preparation of Regional and Forest Plans and the<br />
preparation of regulations to guide that development.<br />
National Register of Historic Places (NRHP)<br />
A list of heritage resources that have local, state, or national significance. The list<br />
is maintained by the Secretary of the Interior.
