would be used to maintain openings that were created near Buckhorn Mountain for<br />

mountain goat forage. These openings were created previously under a separate project.<br />

Prescribed burning would also enhance the mosaic of burned and unburned fuels which<br />

resulted from past wildfires. The result of these treatments would be a decrease in<br />

flamelength, intensity, duration, spotting, probability of ignition, and crownfire potential.<br />

This would create more strategic and tactical firefighting opportunities resulting in<br />

greater success during initial attack due to the fact that fireline construction rates would<br />

be enhanced, line placement opportunities would increase, and resistance to control<br />

would decrease. The reduction in fire behavior would create a safer environment for<br />

firefighters as well as the public. The break up in fuel continuity would also lead to more<br />

opportunities for locating safety zones. The risk of MPB outbreaks and the resulting<br />

accumulation to surface fuels would also be reduced by thinning. For a comparison by<br />
