From the desk of the Executive Director
Dear Members and Apprentices,
Just seems like yesterday it was March and here we are days away from celebrating the 4 th of July. If
you can remember back to the Spring Meeting there was an emphasis placed on Golf 2.0 and
showcasing various Player Development Programs at your facilities. Since this meeting, I have had
the chance to talk with many of you regarding the exciting programs you have implemented thus far
in 2012. I was reminded by a colleague of mine that Player Development is everyone and everything
and it begins immediately as your members, customers and guests arrive at your facility. As PGA
Professionals, we have enormous power to positively affect the lives of those who come and play our
facilities. Whether it’s the member-guest day at the club or the junior golf program you are
conducting at your facility, you and your staff ultimately set the tone for the success of these events.
Personally, I think that is a part of Player Development we could be overlooking. Developing and
executing new programs is key to growing the game of golf and something we must do. Ultimately it
starts when your member, customer or guest first comes in contact with a member of your
professional staff and their experience at your facility.
Speaking of a wonderful golf experience the 2012 PGA Junior Series recently made a stop at
ArborLinks in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Over 120 junior golfers from over 15 states were treated to
perfect golfing conditions where the golf course provided a challenging test for some of the best
junior golfers in the country. Jeff Porter, PGA, Gil Russell, PGA, Golf Course Superintendent, Curt
Greiser and his staff worked side by side creating a first class golfing experience for those young
people and their families. The professional staff at ArborLinks has solidified this event as being one
of the premier junior tournaments in the country.
Lastly, the deadline for many of the various Section Championships are coming up soon and we have
some spectacular facilities lined up for these Championships in August. In the days to come you will
be receiving a call from a member of the Tournament Committee reminding you to register for one or
more of these Championships. Lets continue the trend of increasing participation in these championships!
See you on the tee,
The new logo for the PGA Championship (left) will be used for the first time at the 2013 Championship at Oak Hill.
PGA of America announces new PGA Championship logo
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The PGA of
America announced the launch of a new official logo
for the PGA Championship, which showcases the
Season's Final Major while also supporting its host
venues and its worldwide golf appeal.
The PGA of America engaged PS212 of New York
City as design consultant, to support its objective to
capture the significance of a Championship that
originated in 1916, the spirit of golf and enthusiasm
of unscripted entertainment that is live sports. The
first usage of the new logo begins with the 95th
PGA Championship in August 2013 at Oak Hill
Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
"For more than 95 years, golf enthusiasts around this
country have embraced a world-class PGA Championship
field that competes for the Rodman
Wanamaker Trophy," said PGA of America President
Allen Wronowski. "That sparkling trophy and
The PGA of America brand also have connected
By PGA of America
with many of the finest venues in our sport. The new
PGA Championship logo reflects a proud, distinctive
history while also paying tribute to magnificent
hosts."
David Gaglione, PS212's founder, said that the new
PGA Championship logo, with its centerpiece
Wanamaker Trophy, features four pennants representing
golf's four major championships and captures
the celebratory spirit that the Championship
delivers. The branding of the PGA Championship
logo was a six-month endeavor that, Gaglione said,
"combined the teamwork of future host sites."
"The banner and circle are familiar visual references
in golf. The shading, color, and effects used in the
creation of the PGA Championship logo deliver a
strong reinterpretation of these classic elements,"
said Gaglione. "The rich blue used for the logo emanates
from The PGA of America's core colors that
are found in The PGA's seal."
E MPLOYMENT
How is the start of the summer going for you? In talking with a few of you in the last month, some are
seeing rounds and sales up for 2012- a good thing! Obviously, the weather we have been given has
helped in a big way. Hopefully, the coming months continue the trend in rounds and sales to produce a
better 2012.
Developing players to increase both rounds and sales is something you have been doing or trying to do
for years. Back in the early days of my career in the 80’s, the idea of player development was not so
prevalent in the thought process. Sure, we wanted the people we taught to take their game to the course,
but to say it was a major concern, I cannot say that.
Golf 2.0 and specifically, the Player Development Playbook is your “one-stop” place to look for ideas to
increase rounds and revenue. The “It’s Personal” theme is hopefully resonating with you. I have been
through the first three Player Development Action Steps so let’s move onto the fourth step- Marketing.
All of us are in the recreation business. It is our job to understand and cater our programs to what our
customer wants so we can retain and then hopefully reach new customers. The Boston Consulting Group
determined through surveys that there are over 60 million golfers that have expressed an interest in playing
the game again. Your personal challenge is to connect with those people who have shown an interest
and get them excited about playing golf at your facility. Your marketing message should include:
The Game of Golf: Friends- Family- Fun – Golf is affordable, welcoming, good for your health
and great for your facility.
Your Programs- what separates your programs from the competition.
Yourself- does this make you uncomfortable? It shouldn’t!! You are viewed by many customers as
the “Expert”! Show them you are!!
Here are some ideas as to the “How” to market.
Community Marketing- make an effort to get out into the community to promote yourself, the
game and your facility.
Special Events- deliver a golf experience to a large group of potential customers.
Direct Email/Mail- one-on-one personal communication is utilized for marketing and promotions.
Digital- how is your website? Is it user- friendly? Do your customers tell you how much they enjoy
looking at it? Do new players feel welcome?
On-Site- existing customers can be a valuable resource through word-of-mouth referrals. Make sure
your signage is fresh and fits your target audience.
There are additional ways to market (cross promotions, public relations and traditional advertising). The
above ideas are meant to give you ideas to get you moving to increasing your value to your employer.
to accumulate the highest score. Raul Cortes
7-12 YEAR OLD JUNIORS COMPETE IN THE
2012 NEBRASKA JUNIOR PGA
CHAMPIONSHIP
LINCOLN, NE - Jim Ager Memorial was host to the younger divisions of the Nebraska Jr. PGA
Championship presented by Under Armour and Heritage Food Service Group. This event includes
junior golfers between the ages of 7-12. Twenty four boys and girls from across the state of
Nebraska competed in either the 7-9 division or 10-12 division. The 7-9 divisions played nine holes
while the 10-12 divisions played the nine hole par three course twice.
Luke Kluver, from Grand Island, Nebraska captured the Boys 10-12 division after finishing with a
five over-par 60. Kluver had a sensational first nine holes shooting a one over- par 28. Things were
a lot closer on the second nine as Kluver began to make a few more bogeys and Ryan Van Ostrand,
Lincoln, Nebraska, continued his steady play but fell one shot short finishing at six over-par 61.
Lindsey Thiele from Wahoo, Nebraska finished on top of the Girls 10-12 division after finishing at
18 over-par 72. Thiele paced herself as she matched her first round score of 36 with another 36 in the
second round to win by 16 shots over Gillian Dean, Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Boys 7-9 division was a close race as all four competitors finished within four shots of one
another. Sam Johnson, Lincoln, Nebraska, used a good start to grasp the first place plaque after
finishing at 16 over-par 43. Johnson's 43 was two shots better then Blake Waring, Lincoln, Nebraska,
who finished in second place after carding an 18 over-par 45.
Brynn Sundquist, Lincoln, Nebraska, stole the show in the girls 7-9 division. Sundquist played
steady throughout the round and finished 11 shots clear of second place after she finished with a 12
over-par 39. Taylor Van Ostrand, Lincoln, Nebraska, jumped out of the gates making a par on the
opening hole of the Championship but was not able to match Sundquist's performance and finished in
second place.
