Jim White, PGA
College/University: Hastings College
Year Turned Pro: 1972
Facility and Job Title: Wilderness Ridge Golf Club,
Director of Golf
What was your motivation to become a PGA Professional?
It kind of evolved through some part-time summer jobs, then as an
assistant at the Community College of Lincoln. I was still an amateur
at that point, but knew after several months that this is what I wanted
to do.
What is your specialty in the golf business?
The thing that motivates me the most is starting a new venture. I
have been involved with three start-ups (one that I was a majority
owner). I enjoy the planning and creativity and seeing new ventures
succeed.
Please list any accomplishments (Awards, Certifications, and
Tournaments.)
Obtaining my Master Professional classification. Starting and
successfully running the North Forty Golf Course. Being awarded a
patent (along with associate fell PGA pro Greg Johannesen) for our
unique fitting system. Recently I was elected into the Nebraska High
School Athletic Hall of Fame.
What was your greatest moment in golf?
2004 Sr. Professional National Champion.
What or who has had the greatest impact on your career?
That’s difficult to say. My Grandpa was a successful small businessman
and I think I got some of my entrepreneurial tendencies from him. The
success of the North Forty.
Besides golf, what else do you enjoy?
I like woodworking even though I’m terrible at it; singing (don’t do
much any more) and inventing.
If you could play any golf course in the world, which one would
it be and who would complete your foursome?
It would be St. Andrews, or any of the great Scottish courses because
of the rich history. I’ve never played there and because I hit it so low!
Foursome: Bobby Jones, Paul Weiler, a dear friend and golf pro back in
the 30s, 40s and 50s), and my oldest son Joshua, a PGA Professional.
If you could give lessons to anyone in the world who would it
be and what advice would you give?
Maybe Charles Barkley. Keep head still – someone needs to hold his
head for about an hour a day for a year!
What is your favorite golf instruction tip?
Anyone can learn to grip and setup as well as the best players in the
world. Constantly monitor yourself. Learn these two fundamentals and
the swing is much easier.
