Jennifer Smith, PGA
College/University: Wartburg College, Waverly, IA
Facility and Job Title: Quarry Oaks Golf Club, Ashland, NE –
Director of Marketing
What was your motivation to become a PGA Professional?
I knew I wanted to apply the aspects of my business degree to an
enjoyable career with longevity. Becoming a PGA Professional paved
the way to experience a variety of different areas of the golf business.
I have been very fortunate to work with other fantastic PGA
professionals along the way, and have learned different aspects of the
golf business from every one of them.
What is your specialty in the golf business?
My specialty in the business is marketing/promotions and also some
graphic design. I enjoy the daily challenge of coming up with new
ways to promote and enhance our facility.
Please list any accomplishments (Awards, Certifications, and
Tournaments.)
Four-time qualifier, NCAA Division III Championships, 1988-1991.
Iowa Conference Player of the Year, 1989.
Elected to the Wartburg College Athletic Hall of Fame, 2008.
What was your greatest moment in golf?
I have been fortunate to be able to attend the Masters tournament
twice. In my opinion, it doesn’t get any better than going to Augusta in
early April after a long Nebraska winter.
What or who has had the greatest impact on your career?
Besides both of my parents who are avid golfers, my high school golf
coach, Greg Guinn, had a tremendous impact on my career. This

spring will mark his 39th season of coaching the West Liberty, IA high
school golf team. He is not only a great teacher of the game and an
excellent player himself, but he inspires you to become the best
person you can be, both on and off the golf course.
Besides golf, what else do you enjoy?
I enjoy traveling (especially cruising), spending time with my husband,
and just being a mom to my six-month old son. I also enjoy watching
any sporting event.
If you could play any golf course in the world, which one would
it be and who would complete your foursome?
Augusta National would be my choice, and I would have to bring along
my parents and my husband.
If you could give lessons to anyone in the world who would it
be and what advice would you give?
I can’t wait to be able to teach my son the game as he grows and
explain that it is a sport we will be able to play together as a family for
a lifetime.
What is your favorite golf instruction tip?
I tell all of my students to read the book “Golf Is Not a Game of
Perfect” by Dr. Bob Rotella. The book really puts golf in perspective,
and does of great job of explaining how to manage your golf game for
more enjoyment during your round.
