Abstract<br />

The main goal of modern maize breeding is to find hybrid combinati<strong>on</strong>s with superior<br />

agr<strong>on</strong>omic performances over a broad range of growing c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s including drought <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> lean<br />

soil. We evaluated 16 temperate maize inbred lines crossed to four testers under stress <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>stress<br />

c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s to: 1) estimate the general (GCA) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> specific (SCA) combining ability for<br />

grain yield (GY) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> anthesis-silking interval (ASI), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2) assess the performance of testcrosses<br />

in stress <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>stress envir<strong>on</strong>ments. The testcrosses were evaluated in intermediate drought<br />

stress, low nitrogen (N) stress, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>stress (normal) envir<strong>on</strong>ments in 2007. Mean grain yield<br />

for testcrosses ranged from 3.72 t ha-1 under intermediate drought stress to 7.80 t ha-1 in normal<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment. Drought <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> low N stress increased ASI. Neither SCA effects nor GCA effects for<br />

GY were c<strong>on</strong>sistent over envir<strong>on</strong>ments, suggesting the need for c<strong>on</strong>ducting selecti<strong>on</strong> in target<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ments. Additive genetic effects for GY were more important than n<strong>on</strong>additive effects in<br />

normal envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> under intermediate drought stress, while in all three envir<strong>on</strong>ments<br />

n<strong>on</strong>additive effects were more important than additive effects when ASI was in questi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Correlati<strong>on</strong> coefficients between GY of testcrosses <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> ASI varied from -0.13 for normal<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment to -0.47** for the envir<strong>on</strong>ment under low N stress.<br />

Sažetak<br />

Glavni cilj modernog oplemenjivanja kukuruza je pr<strong>on</strong>aći hibridnu kombinaciju sa superiornim<br />

agr<strong>on</strong>omskim svojstvima u širokom rasp<strong>on</strong>u uvjeta uzgoja, uključujući sušu i tlo siromašno<br />

hranjivima. Ispitali smo 16 inbred linija kukuruza umjerenog pojasa križanih sa 4 testera u<br />

stresnim i nestresnim okolinama s ciljem procjene: 1) opće (GCA) i specifične (SCA)<br />

kombinacijske sposobnosti za prinos zrna (GY) i interval prašenje-svilanje (ASI), i 2)<br />

vrijednosti testkrižanaca u stresnim i nestresnim okolinama. Testkrižanci su ocjenjeni u<br />

okolinama s umjerenom sušom, s niskim sadržajem dušika (N) i okolini bez ciljanog stresa<br />

(normalnoj) u 2007. godini. Prosječni prinos zrna testkrižanaca kretao se je od 3,72 t ha-1 u<br />

uvjetima stresa izazvanog umjerenom sušom do 7,80 t ha-1 u normalnoj okolini. Suša i stres<br />

uslijed niskog sadržaja dušika povećali su ASI. Učinci SCA i GCA za prinos zrna nisu bili<br />

k<strong>on</strong>zistentni kroz okoline, što upućuje na potrebu provođenja selekcije u ciljanim okolinama.<br />

Aditivni genetski učinci za prinos zrna bili su važniji od neaditivnih učinaka u normalnoj<br />

okolini i u okolini s umjerenom sušom. Za svojstvo ASI u sve tri okoline neaditivni učinci bili<br />

su važniji od aditivnih učinaka. Koeficijenti korelacije između prinosa zrna testkrižanaca i ASI<br />

kretali su se od -0,13 za normalnu okolinu do -0,47** za okolinu s niskim sadržajem dušika.<br />
