Silver Lake
Sand Dunes Area
elcome to the Silver Lake
WSand Dunes Area! Once
covered by white pine forest,
a growing America created a
huge demand for timber, and
the trees were cut. In 1871,
much of the lumber went to
rebuild Chicago after their
disastrous fire. With nothing
to stop them, the dunes
began their slow movement
eastward, and stumps of the
old forest are still
being uncovered
by the shifting
dunes. Today, the
dunes are preserved
as the Silver Lake
State Park. They
are the only sand
dunes east of the
Mississippi, where
motorized vehicles
are allowed. There
is also a designated
pedestrian area for
walking, hiking,
and playing in the
sand. With shoreline
on Lake Michigan as well
as Silver Lake, there are plenty
of beaches to enjoy. With a
variety of unique attractions
and events, a diversity of good
food, and excellent accommodations,
your visit will be filled
with much memory-making
family fun!
