elcome to the Silver Lake
WSand Dunes Area! Once
covered by white pine forest,
a growing America created a
huge demand for timber, and
the trees were cut. In 1871,
much of the lumber went to
rebuild Chicago after their
disastrous fire. With nothing
to stop them, the dunes
began their slow movement
eastward, and stumps of the
old forest are still
being uncovered
by the shifting
dunes. Today, the
dunes are preserved
as the Silver Lake
State Park. They
are the only sand
dunes east of the
Mississippi, where
motorized vehicles
are allowed. There
is also a designated
pedestrian area for
walking, hiking,
and playing in the
sand. With shoreline
on Lake Michigan as well
as Silver Lake, there are plenty
of beaches to enjoy. With a
variety of unique attractions
and events, a diversity of good
food, and excellent accommodations,
your visit will be filled
with much memory-making
family fun!

A beacon of Light
Over The Dunes
ork began on the Little Sable Point Lighthouse in April
Wof 1873. It was built very similarly to the Big Sable Point
Lighthouse near Ludington, and was completed in
1874. The distinctive conical, red brick tower
stands 115 feet tall, and is topped off by a
black, cast iron parapet. 139 steps lead up to
the lantern room, which houses a thirdorder
Fresnel lens. At one time, the lighthouse
parcel also contained a one
and a half story, brick Keeper’s
house, a barn, and a boat landing
and boathouse. In 1890 the
tower was painted white after
mariners indicated that the
red brick could not be seen
during daylight hours.

trail was created, and
wooden boardwalks
made it possible to
bring in supplies. In 1911, a third floor
was added to the Keeper’s house. In
1954, electricity was finally brought in,
and the light went from kerosene to a
250 watt electrical light. Sadly, in 1955,
all but the tower were torn down.
The white paint was sandblasted off
in 1974, and the tower appears much
as it did 130 years ago. Thanks to
the Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers
Association visitors are now able to
tour the tower, and receive a telling
of its history from one of the many
volunteers available daily from

A Dune Driving Legacy
For over 80 years, the Mac Wood family has been delighting
visitors and locals alike with its famous Dune Rides. Each season,
they ensure that thousands of visitors from all over the world
are given the opportunity to experience the sand dunes close up.
As the scooters make their way over the southern portion of the
dunes, their drivers provide an informative and humorous narrative
of the history of the dunes. On land leased from the Silver
Lake State Park, Mac Woods is the longest running concession in
the Michigan State Parks system.

ilver Lake is a wonderful lake for any
Strailered boat. There are two public launch
spots: the Silver Lake State Park, and a public
launch closer to Mac Woods Dune Rides.
There are 690 acres of lake to enjoy as
you tube, waterski, sightsee, and of course,
enjoy the dunes. The dune side of the lake is
perfect for beaching your boat for a climb up the dunes for the
breathtaking view of Silver Lake. Many boaters enjoy lying in the
sun, and picnicking on this beach. Several local businesses offer
boats, jet skis, and other watercraft for rentals. You might also like
to experience the dunes from Lake Michigan. There is no access
from Silver Lake, but nearby Pentwater offers a public launch. With
numerous smaller, inland lakes in the area, no matter what type of
boating adventure you seek, it’s sure to be found in the Silver Lake
Sand Dunes area.

he Silver Lake Sand dunes
are a natural phenomenon
nestled between Silver Lake and
Lake Michigan. Sand, sun, and fun
attract more than a million visitors each year. The dunes are divided
into three sections. The northern area is reserved for off-road
vehicles for testing your sand driving skills. Whether you rent or
take your own vehicle, you will want to experience this adventure.
The center region of the dunes is reserved for hiking, walking, or
simply enjoying the beaches of Lake Michigan and Silver Lake. The
southern area is home to Mac Woods Dune Rides. Mac Woods
has operated for more than 80 years, allowing visitors to enjoy a
40 minute, 7 mile tour of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Whatever
option you choose for conquering the dunes, you are in for an
unforgettable experience of fun!

camping, the Silver Lake Sand Dunes –
Hart area is full of numerous parks. Explore,
and find exactly what you are looking for!
SILVER LAKE STATE pARK
Located across from the dunes, this park is all about
location. Facilities include 450 camping sites, a
large beach area for swimming, a boat launch, picnic area, fishing, hiking, and
restroom facilities. A day pass is needed to use this beach area and can be
purchased at the campground entrance. The campground entrance is located
½ mile south of the round-about.
SILVER LAKE STATE pARK ORV AREA
The only dunes east of Utah that you can drive on! The Silver Lake Sand Dunes
are open every day from April 1, thru October 31. Operated by the Michigan
DNR, the dunes encompass nearly 2000 acres of rolling sand hills, roughly 1/3
of which is open to personal ORV’s. The ORV entrance is located at 24th Ave.
and Ridge Rd.
gOLDEN TOWNSHIp pARK
A beach area located where the Silver Creek channel meets Lake Michigan,
and a favorite for families with small children. Facilities include portable restrooms.
Parking is very limited so arrive early. Cars parked along the road are
towed away. Parking is also available ¼ mile south at the Lighthouse. Located
at Silver Lake Rd. and Lighthouse Lane.
CEDAR pOINT COUNTy pARK
Cedar Point is a great place for spending a day at the beach! The 3 acre park
provides swimming, a picnic area, and restrooms. Spectacular multi-tiered
wooden steps guide visitors from the high bluff, through the forest canopy, to
the beach below. Located along the shore of Lake Michigan between Silver
Lake and Pentwater.

gALE’S pOND pARK
Gale’s Pond is a nature area, and a favorite
haunt for those wishing to get away for an
hour or two to enjoy the sight of sandhill
cranes, ducks, and other wildlife. Marked nature trails
offer the fresh scent of the woods, and a peaceful hike. Facilities include
bridges, boardwalks, marked trails, and picnic tables. This park is located in
Elbridge Township at Filmore and 112th Ave., 5 miles southeast of Hart.
HART VETERANS MEMORIAL pARK
A family-friendly, wonderful park located right on Hart Lake, just north of downtown.
The park includes a monument to the area’s fallen veterans, a jet airplane
from the Korean War, and three flags – American flag, Michigan flag, and POW/
MIA flag – that fly year round. Facilities include benches, picnic tables, a
barrier-free boardwalk, and a great fishing area for the kids!
pIRATE’S pARADISE
The official playground of the Hart Public Schools, this park is one
your kids will want to visit again and again. Built by community volunteers,
the large play area has all the swings, climbing areas, tunnels,
activity centers, and twisty slides that kids crave! Facilities include a
picnic area and nearby basketball court. Located off Johnson St. a
few blocks west of State St. in downtown Hart.
JOHN gURNEy pARK
Recently designated a Michigan Historical Landmark, this park is one of Hart’s
best kept secrets. Sit on the beach and enjoy a quiet moment, or picnic in the
park. Campers are welcome, too, to enjoy the beach, children’s play area, and
much more. A public boat launch is available as well. All this is within walking
distance to downtown Hart.

pATHWAyS TRAIL
Great for hiking and mountain biking in spring, summer and fall, and crosscountry
skiing in winter, the Pentwater Pathways can be enjoyed year-round!
The Trail is located in the Pere Marquette State Forest just south of Pentwater
Lake. The marked trail system includes four loops totaling 15 miles, with beginner
to advanced trails. The trails cover soft, rolling hills, are heavily wooded,
and offer abundant wildlife sightings. To get to the parking area, take Long
Bridge Rd. and turn SE on Wayne Rd. Travel 2-3 miles until pavement ends.

Most of the time, you will have this well-rounded park to yourselves. Located
across the street from the swimming area on Stony Lake, and along Stony
Creek, it’s well-suited for a family picnic spot. Facilities include fishing and
picnicking areas, playground, baseball diamond, basketball court, grills and
restrooms. Located off B-15, on the west side of Stony Lake.
CLAybANKS TOWNSHIp pARK
If you enjoy a natural setting with unspoiled views of
the Lake Michigan shoreline, this is the spot for you!
A wooden walkway leads you to one of the most
spectacular Lake Michigan beaches in the area. The
park extends one-half mile along the shoreline, but the
undeveloped views extend to the north and south as
far as the eye can see. Rustic camping is available.

Hart-Montague Rail Trail
he Hart-Montague Rail Trail was Michigan’s first linear state
Tpark. With its starting point in downtown Hart, the trail follows
the former C&O railroad right-of-way, and heads 22 miles
south to Montague. The trail is ideal for bicycling, in-line skating,
and jogging or walking. It is wheelchair accessible. Trail users
will find many rest stops along the way,
including some with tasty
treats and great conversation.

Twalking/biking introduction
to the historical buildings in the
city of Hart. The tour begins
at the Hart-Montague Rail
Trail parking lot on Polk Road.
There you will find a map and
display panels explaining the
historical significance of the two
churches, two homes,
a one-room school,
flour mill, John Gurney
Park, a bank and former
factory. Several of these
buildings are located in
the Hart Historic District
located on Union St. The District has numerous
displays and buildings that appeal
to all ages, including a restored log
cabin, animated doll collection, furs,
and an extensive and unique Native
American artifacts collection, a
“must see” for history buffs!
