Standard <strong>Gymnastics</strong> 6 7 8<br />

2 Students will develop an appreciation for balance,<br />

flexibility, strength and body awareness through gymnastics.<br />

4 Students will understand the importance of safety as it<br />

relates to warming-up, gymnastics events, skills and<br />

spotting.<br />

3 Students are given the opportunity to experience a variety of<br />

gymnastics events and skills.<br />

3 Students will be given a basic introduction in the following<br />

events: vaulting, balance beam, ropes, tumbling/floor<br />

exercise, parallel bars, uneven bars/single bar<br />

4 Students will be given a basic safety and skill introduction<br />

on the following events that includes proper technique and<br />

form: vaulting, balance beam, ropes, tumbling/floor<br />

exercise, parallel bars, uneven bars/single bar<br />

Students will rotate from event to event working to master<br />

beginning gymnastic moves.<br />

Students will rotate from event to event working to master<br />

beginning and intermediate gymnastic moves.<br />

1,2,3 Students will individually test on the events to accumulate<br />

set rubric points for a grade<br />

1 Students will individually test on floor exercise/tumbling<br />

and choose one other apparatus to accumulate set rubric<br />

points for a grade.<br />

3 Students performing at a higher difficulty are given<br />

instruction and opportunities to attempt more difficult skills.<br />

1,2 Students are required to perform a multiple element routine<br />

from memory to complete their skill assessment.<br />

<strong>Gymnastics</strong> Unit<br />

Safety Contract<br />

I ______________________________ agree to abide by the safety rules and regulations<br />

set up in the gymnastics gym. If I disobey or break any of the safety rules I understand<br />

that I will no longer be allowed to participate in the gymnastics unit.<br />

Rules:<br />

• One person on a piece of equipment at a time.<br />

• No running, pushing or other horseplay is allowed anywhere in the gym.<br />

• No swinging on the climbing ropes.<br />

• No diving and sliding on the mats.<br />

• When vaulting, the springboard will be set at the appropriate distance for the<br />

person vaulting.<br />

• Both hands will land on the horse when vaulting.<br />

• A spotter will always be used for handspring vaults.<br />

• Only students who are dressed out are allowed to participate.<br />

• Inverted hangs from the bars without hands is prohibited.<br />

• Chalk up only when it is your turn to be on the bars.<br />

• Safety mats will be in place before working on equipment.<br />

• Adult supervision and permission is needed to work on the equipment.<br />

• Students are expected to stretch out on the mats before they get on the equipment<br />

and to get off the equipment when class is dismissed.<br />

• No gum.<br />

• Shirts need to be tucked in on the bars to avoid the shirt wrapping around the bar.<br />

• No socks on the balance beams.<br />

• If the instructor asks for cooperation regarding individual safety or safety of<br />

others, it is expected that you will abide by what the instructor asks.<br />
