EDACL should see $60K
from 2008 quilt auction
Proceeds down from last year due to lower attendance

The Elmira and District
Association for Community
Living has an additional
$58,000 in its coffers
this week following
its 35th annual quilt auction,
held Oct. 25 at Riverdale
Poultry Express
in Elmira.
That’s down from last
year, however, due to
a lower-than-expected
turnout.
Gross revenues of
about $75,000 should
net perhaps as much as
$60,000 after expenses,
as proceeds continue to
come in. Last year, those
numbers were $85,000
and $68,000 respectively.
“We didn’t have the
attendance this year.
There were a couple of
competing events, and
that may have drawn
people away,” said EDA-
CL finance officer Gail
Bartlett.
The event is the notfor-profit
organization’s
largest fundraiser of the
year, backing its efforts
to support people with
developmental disabilities.
It helps more than
100 individuals and their
families in the townships
of Woolwich, Wellesley
and Mapleton.
Its fundraising efforts
are necessary to pay for
goods and services that
fall outside the operating
funds provided by

“We use the money
from the auction to purchase
items that the
ministry doesn’t fund,”
she explained.
That includes such
things as the EDACL
and ARC Industries
vans, for instance. Even
large projects such as
the assisted living centre
and office building that
opened a few years ago
on Barnswallow Drive
in Elmira were paid for
with money raised by
the organization rather
than from government
sources.
While the auction is
its largest single source
of fundraising, EDACL
receives significant support
from the Elmira Maple
Syrup Festival committee,
as well as from
smaller events throughout
the year.

Bartlett.
Along with the quilts,
visitors can purchase
furniture, new and used
items, silent auction entries
and baked goods.
“We had a large selection
of handmade furniture
this year, larger than
usual. Really nice stuff
… and that’s all donated
from the community.”
Quilts, the centerpiece
of the event, are donated
by the community, with
strong support from the
Mennonites and local
sewing groups. Most of
them are hand sewn.
Such community generosity
helps to keep the
organization working
above and beyond what
the Ministry of Community
Family and Children’s
Services provides
in the way of operating
funds, she noted.
