Like Garry Morden, all
firefighters deserve thanks
To the Editor,
Bob and I recently lost
a very dear friend, Garry
Morden, the fire chief
for the City of Mississauga.
Garry had to deal with
a lot of paperwork and
meetings in his job,
but he liked to join his
crews, sometimes to
support and encourage
them, but often just to
grab a hose and be part
of the action.
In his years as chief,
he helped to develop the
Mississauga emergency
medical response procedures
and advocated
aggressive fire prevention
and public education
programs because
he believed there is no
honour in fighting a fire
that could have been prevented.
Some of you will remember
the 1979 Mississauga
train derailment.
A CP freight train carrying
dangerous chemicals
derailed, forcing
more than 200,000 people
to be evacuated. Garry
and many other brave
souls battled the resultant
fires. The “firemen’s
cancer” that Garry died
from probably had its
beginnings during that
very dangerous time.
Recently, after a visit to
see Garry, he e-mailed
me saying, “Today I was
introduced to our latest
To the Editor,
NDP leader Jack Layton
and Liberal leader
Stéphane Dion by joining
a separatist coalition
have betrayed the
country of Canada.
This unholy pact with
the devil will move
Canada closer to a
breakup by alienating
class of recruits. Boy!
It seems like yesterday
that I was sitting in their
chairs (1977). Time flies.
Aside from joining the
clergy, I can’t imagine
a way that I could have
served that would have
been more fulfilling. The
fire service is an amazing
tradition of service
and comradeship.”
On Sept. 24, Garry was
invited to unveil a plaque
and plans for a $30-million
fire and emergency
training centre that will
be named the Garry W.
Morden Centre to honour
him and his legacy.
Our town volunteer
firemen and others like
them throughout our
country will probably
never have a building
named after them, yet
they regularly demonstrate
the same heroism
as our friend Garry.
They risk their health
and their lives to protect
us and save us from fires,
automobile accidents
and other emergency
situations.
I’m thankful to each
and every member of
our local fire department,
past and present,
for the heroic service
they give our community.
You, like our friend
Garry, are heroes day in
and day out.
“No, not really. I don’t like
Stephane Dion. I think it’s just
a power grab.”
“Harper screwed us, he lied …
and lied, but if we put the other
guys in, you can’t win. No matter
who ... we’re screwed. I would
say ‘no.’ Everybody wants to get
bailed out. If I can’t pay my bills
I can’t go to the government and
go ‘help me, help me.’”
“Definitely not. For a start, I
don’t agree with the coalition
and secondly I don’t agree with
how they’re doing it. They say
they’ve been voted in … they’re
not voted in.”
THE OBSERVER | Saturday, December 06, 2008
Do you support the opposition bid to topple the Harper government?
“No. I don’t support that one
iota. They’re so far apart with
their policies it would never
work because they’d be fighting
amongst themselves. And I think
Harper should have his chance
to see what he can do. They’re
not even allowing that.”
