16 | COMMENT & OPINION »LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Like Garry Morden, all firefighters deserve thanks To the Editor, Bob and I recently lost a very dear friend, Garry Morden, the fire chief for the City of Mississauga. Garry had to deal with a lot of paperwork and meetings in his job, but he liked to join his crews, sometimes to support and encourage them, but often just to grab a hose and be part of the action. In his years as chief, he helped to develop the Mississauga emergency medical response procedures and advocated aggressive fire prevention and public education programs because he believed there is no honour in fighting a fire that could have been prevented. Some of you will remember the 1979 Mississauga train derailment. A CP freight train carrying dangerous chemicals derailed, forcing more than 200,000 people to be evacuated. Garry and many other brave souls battled the resultant fires. The “firemen’s cancer” that Garry died from probably had its beginnings during that very dangerous time. The fire service is an amazing tradition of service and comradeship.” On Sept. 24, Garry was invited to unveil a plaque and plans for a $30-million fire and emergency training centre that will be named the Garry W. Morden Centre to honour him and his legacy. Our town volunteer firemen and others like them throughout our country will probably never have a building named after them, yet they regularly demonstrate the same heroism as our friend Garry. They risk their health and their lives to protect us and save us from fires, automobile accidents and other emergency situations. I’m thankful to each and every member of our local fire department, past and present, for the heroic service they give our community. You, like our friend Garry, are heroes day in and day out. As soon as the stock market crashed we noticed the difference immediately; it’s been really slowing down,” said Elmira Home Hardware dealer and BIA executive member Krista McBay. “People just aren’t parting with their money as much as they have been.” Typically a recession-resistant business, McBay’s hardware store has seen a slide in sales throughout the last year she said and consequently, the dealer has had to implement some changes, such as digging up inventory and slashing prices. She will also likely have to stock fewer items in the near future. “Everything is under a fine magnifying glass right now,” she said. We’re hopeful that our retailers will see some good sales this season,” said Jenny Shantz, manager of St. Jacobs Country, the destination marketing brand that includes the factory outlet mall and the farmers’ markets. “We have concentrated more on attracting [local] people to St Jacobs, probably more than any other year.” While sales might have dropped in the village, however, it appears the outlet mall has seen an increase in purchases as shoppers look for bargains. Aware their customers are watching what they buy, retail stores are working harder to lure Christmas shoppers over the threshold. “The retailers are being very aggressive trying to kick-start the holiday season,” said Ron Mc- C.H.
