More and more, optimization methods are penetrating the design process in industrial<br />

applications resulting in new aspects and demands which have to be discussed and<br />

answered by scientists working in this field. Topics which have been identified as<br />

crucial for the design process but which have not been discussed sufficiently, include -<br />

but are not limited to- sensitivity analysis of elastic multibody systems, automatic<br />

differentiation of multidisciplinary design problems, topology optimization of<br />

mechanisms, multicriteria optimization and identification methods, application of<br />

evolutionary optimization to engineering problems, and new scalar optimization<br />

algorithms. Thus, we are convinced that there is an urgent need to meet and to discuss<br />

recent developments and advances in the stimulating environment of an EUROMECH<br />

Colloquium. It will be one of the major goals of the colloquium to attract both scientists<br />

from academic institutions and people from industries to report on their experience with<br />

computer-aided optimization of mechanical systems in a research oriented or an<br />

industrial environment as well as on the major bottlenecks and shortcomings in theory,<br />

concept and implementation from their point of view.<br />

The purpose of the proposed colloquium will be, to provide a basis for discussion and<br />

exchange of new concepts and ideas to scientists from all over Europe. Emphasis will<br />

also be placed on sharing algorithms and concepts with young researchers who only<br />

recently entered the stage of mechanical system design optimization.
