Parametric description Demonstratives and the definite article Dem, when it surfaces in the D-area, either has the property of (contextually) licensing the person feature of D or not. 1 If it has this property (person-licensing), person is licensed even if D is empty (no 3rd person operator, i.e. the definite article, is needed). 2 If Dem is not person-licensing, the 3rd person operator (definite article) must surface in D ⇒ both Dem and the definite article are in the same DP.
