<strong>Reservation</strong> <strong>Farrier</strong> Apprenticeship for beginning ranchers and farmers<br />

Greetings!<br />

Applications are now being accepted for <strong>SDSU</strong> <strong>Extension</strong> <strong>Reservation</strong> <strong>Farrier</strong> Apprenticeship for<br />

beginning ranchers and farmers. Ten individuals will be accepted to learn farrier skills and associated skills<br />

necessary for pursuing this practice as a part-time business (billing, business cards, taxes, etc). <strong>Farrier</strong><br />

apprentices will receive farrier tools for practice and job development. The training will take place on the<br />

Pine Ridge, and potentially other, reservations by highly skilled and specifically chosen industry farriers in<br />

conjunction with <strong>SDSU</strong> <strong>Extension</strong>.<br />

This apprenticeship program is geared for beginning ranchers and farmers on the Pine Ridge and other SD<br />

<strong>Reservation</strong>s. This is also part of an equitarian initiative for South Dakota’s reservation equine population.<br />

Equitarian work is veterinary care or education to advance the welfare of any equine species. Acceptance<br />

into the program is dependent upon applicants’ plans to impact reservation equine welfare through their<br />

work.<br />

Successful applicants must:<br />

• attend all training and workshops scheduled for May 21-25 th<br />

and June 11-15 th<br />

.<br />

• complete nightly assignments during the workshop.<br />

• be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.<br />

• be committed to developing farrier skills and provide their services to reservation equines.<br />

Preference will be given to:<br />

• candidates from Pine Ridge <strong>Reservation</strong>, although all are welcome and encouraged to apply.<br />

• those who are beginning a career in farming or ranching, or would like to start a career with horses.<br />

• candidates who demonstrate that they embody the equitarian spirit.<br />
