The older Dukes stag<strong>in</strong>g system 42 for CRC and its later modifications (ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

the Modified Dukes-Astler-Coller stag<strong>in</strong>g - MAC 43, 44) is a pathological stag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

based on resection of the tumor and measures the depth of <strong>in</strong>vasion through<br />

the mucosa and bowel wall. It does not take <strong>in</strong>to account the level of nodal<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement or the grade of the tumor. It is, however, still widely used <strong>in</strong><br />

surgical publications <strong>in</strong> Belgium and other European countries.<br />

Based on different sources 40, 41, 45, 44 we produced a comprehensive overview of<br />

the TNM stages for CRC and their correlates <strong>with</strong> Dukes and MAC<br />

classifications (Table 4).
