to more than half of the CRC cases <strong>in</strong> Belgium.<br />

Age-specific <strong>in</strong>cidence rate is the number of new cases per year <strong>in</strong> a specific 5year<br />

age group per 100.000 <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>in</strong> the same age group. Age-specific<br />

<strong>in</strong>cidence rates by gender for colorectal cancer <strong>in</strong> Flanders, years 2000 - 2001,<br />

are presented <strong>in</strong> Figure 3. Incidence data were calculated on the basis of the<br />

annual absolute <strong>in</strong>cidence and age-specific population data from the National<br />

Institute of Statistics (NIS).<br />

The Flemish registration also provides data on primary tumor localisations, and,<br />

especially <strong>in</strong> view of the different options for screen<strong>in</strong>g, this is important to<br />

consider, s<strong>in</strong>ce not all techniques are equally able to detect abnormalities <strong>in</strong> all<br />

parts of the colon.<br />

Distribution by localisation <strong>in</strong> Flanders 2000 - 2001 is shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 4.<br />

However, it should be recognised that the exact primary localisation was<br />

unknown <strong>in</strong> 17% (colon, not otherwise specified).<br />
