APPENDIX 1: SEARCH STRATEGY AND DATA SOURCES<br />

DATABASES<br />

• Pubmed: is a service <strong>of</strong> the U.S. National Library <strong>of</strong> Medicine that<br />

includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life<br />

science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. It<br />

includes 4500 journals. Access by www.pubmed.gov<br />

• Embase: is a European database that includes over 18 million citations:<br />

7 million unique Medline records and 11 million Embase records. It<br />

includes more than 7000 pharmocological and biomedical journals.<br />

• Cochrane database: is a database <strong>of</strong> systematic reviews. Cochrane<br />

Reviews are systematic assessments <strong>of</strong> evidence <strong>of</strong> the effects <strong>of</strong><br />

healthcare interventions and are published in full text in The Cochrane<br />

Database <strong>of</strong> Systematic Reviews, one <strong>of</strong> the databases in The Cochrane<br />

• Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD) databases includes mainly:<br />

o DARE (Database <strong>of</strong> Abstracts <strong>of</strong> Reviews <strong>of</strong> Effects) which<br />

contains over 4000 abstracts <strong>of</strong> quality assessed and critically<br />

appraised systematic reviews. This database focuses on the<br />

effects <strong>of</strong> interventions used in health and social care.<br />

o NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NHS EED) contains over<br />

6000 abstracts <strong>of</strong> quality assessed economic evaluations.<br />

o The HTA database which brings together details <strong>of</strong> completed<br />

and ongoing health technology assessments from around the<br />

world.<br />

• The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies supports and<br />

promotes evidence-based health policy-making through comprehensive<br />

and rigorous analysis <strong>of</strong> the dynamics <strong>of</strong> health care systems in Europe.<br />

The Observatory is a partnership between the World Health<br />

Organization Regional Office for Europe, the Governments <strong>of</strong> Belgium,<br />

Finland, Greece, Norway, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden, the Veneto<br />

Region <strong>of</strong> Italy, the European Investment Bank, the Open Society<br />
