(1)Vital signs. Enable a user to electronically record, modify,<br />

and retrieve a patient’s vital signs including, at a minimum,<br />

the height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse.<br />

(2)Calculate body mass index. Automatically calculate and<br />

display body mass index (BMI) based on a patient’s height<br />

and weight.<br />

(3) Plot and display growth charts. Plot and electronically<br />

display, upon request, growth charts for patients 2-20 years<br />

old.<br />

§170.302(f)<br />

(1)Vital signs. Enable a user to electronically record, modify,<br />

and retrieve a patient’s vital signs including, at a minimum,<br />

height, weight, and blood pressure.<br />

Comment. One commenter noted that the units <strong>of</strong> measurement should be<br />

specified in the EHR with regards to vital signs. For example that height should be<br />

specified in inches or centimeters.<br />

Response. We do not believe that this level <strong>of</strong> specificity is necessary. We<br />

expect that Complete EHR and EHR Module developers will include the units <strong>of</strong> measure<br />

that their customers believe are necessary to meet their needs, which in many cases will<br />

include those that patients routinely request. We also expect that many Complete EHR<br />

and EHR Module developers will <strong>of</strong>fer both metric units and U.S. units <strong>of</strong> measurement,<br />

as a standard business practice.<br />

Comments. In what appeared to be a reaction to the proposed meaningful use<br />

objective and measure, some commenters requested that we remove BMI as part <strong>of</strong> the
