Renzo Piano Building Workshop Internship Competition 2011
Rani Rupmati, the Queen of the Hills, secretly loves Narmad, the noble man of the plains. The
Queen decides to build a small but luxurious living abode for Narmad. The King, Bahadur, is unaware of
this romantic interlude. Given the delicate nature of the situation, Rupmati plans to locate this abode
between the palace and the cliff, visually hidden from the main palace complex. This is an abode for all
seasons; a place to enjoy the starry skies of summer nights, the huddled mornings of cold winters, and the
romantic drama of unfolding rains.
The entire construction is to be executed secretly during seven nights while the king is away fighting
a battle. The situation is treacherous in more ways than one; the loose rocks of the three hundred metre
steep cliff disallow the possibility of foundations, the only recourse being the rock solid palace walls.
Curiously, this drama is unfolding in the year 2011.
