Arrive In The Fall ~ Stay Into Spring
Stand at the edge of the Grand Canyon,
marvel at the red rocks of Sedona, experience a
360-degree view of an Arizona sunset - and do it
between April and October.
So many RV’ers in southern Arizona hook up
their rigs too early, heading home before spring
has truly arrived.
In most regions, Arizona’s most enjoyable
weather is April through May and from mid-
September through October. That’s when we
have warm days and patio-perfect evenings with
cool desert breezes and spectacular sunsets.
In the early mornings, we have our windows
open and enjoy our morning papers and coffee
on the patio. We take long walks and listen to the
birds.
Arizona offers so many options for hikers.
They can explore the trails of the Coronado
National Forest as they visit the awesome
Karchner Caverns. They can participate in
Bisbee’s Fiesta de las Aves (Festival of the Birds),
a full week of activities celebrating the migratory
birds that have earned southeastern Arizona a
special place in the hearts of birders everywhere.
They can try the Wilson Mountain trail where
they’ll love the eagle’s view of Oak Creek Canyon
and the surrounding mountains.
Baseball fans have flocked to Arizona for over
50 years to enjoy Arizona’s most comfortable
season and watch major league baseball spring
training in the metro Phoenix and Tucson areas.
Golfers, too, flock to the more than 300 courses
across the state.
Although the weather does the “Summer
Sizzle” in southwest Arizona during July and
August, RVing is still a wonderful option.
Arizona’s High Desert, including the northern
Arizona and White Mountains regions, offers a
warm setting with a variety of recreational, small
town celebrations and entertainment venues. The
West Coast region has plenty of water sports to
entertain and keep visitors cool during the heat of
the summer.
Sports fanatics root for the Arizona
Diamondbacks baseball team or Phoenix
Mercury women’s NBA basketball team, and
start the football season early by viewing the
Arizona Cardinals “up close and personal” at
their Flagstaff training camp or cheering them at
their pre-season games in the covered Glendale
Stadium.
Music lovers enjoy the music at the White
Mountain Bluegrass Festival, at Sedona’s Jazz
on the Rocks, an internationally known jazz
festival, or at the Grand Canyon Music Festival,
while theatergoers can savor Prescott’s Arizona
Shakespeare Festival as well as numerous local
theater and regional theater offerings. Art
enthusiasts can scout Phoenix’s First Fridays Art
Walk, Tucson’s La Fiesta de San Augustin or
Chinle’s annual Central Navajo Fair.
Arizona is always in season.
Casa
Grande
Just far enough away from the city
excitement of Phoenix, the Casa Grande
community is a welcome retreat for the
low desert RVer. Shopping and services are
convenient, right in Casa Grande, and more
options are just a 30 minute drive north on I-10.
Nothing can compare to the beautiful open vistas
of this area. It shares the glorious climate of
the Valley of the Sun, so outdoor activities like
hiking and sightseeing will keep you busy. Located
near the tribal reservations of the Gila River and
Tohono O’Odham, there are several small local
museums and information sites to learn about
the Native Americans of this region. The Casa
Grande Ruins National Monument is in nearby
Coolidge and much more Arizona history can be
studied in Tucson, to the southeast, or in Phoenix,
to the northwest.
To find out what is going on in Casa Grande, log
onto the official City of Casa Grande web site at
Old Bisbee, once a bustling mining town,
is now a charming hillside retreat.
Copper is one of Arizona’s “5 Cs” and there’s a
rich history of copper mining in this southestern
corner of the state. While modern mining still
goes on here, it’s the well-documented history of the
boom time that makes this area fascinating.
Bisbee was once the overcrowded home of 20,000 souls
who made their fortunes mining the rich copper, silver
and gold deposits. Now, it’s the charming, artist-loving
seat of Cochise County. Nestled in the Mule Mountains
are well-preserved Victorian buildings and a small but
devoted population of full time residents.
Douglas and Naco are just north of the Mexico border,
which makes them convenient for well-planned visits to
another country.
Sierra Vista is a quickly-growing modern community,
just to the east of Fort Huachuca, an active Army base.
Everyone who has seen a western movie knows about
the violent history of Tombstone. Much of the actual
hangouts of Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp have been
preserved and regular “gun fights” add to the drama.
The landscape of Cochise County is as diverse as the
rest of Arizona, and surprising lush, verdant riparian
conservation areas take turns with rugged mountains as
a feast for the eyes. Visit Kartchner Caverns State Park
to see underground beauty, or Chiricahua National
Monument for towering rock formations. There’s
something for everyone!
Cochise County: Road Trip AZ!
Cochise County’s climate offers welcome
relief all year round. It has high elevations that
offer cooler days and evenings during the height
of Arizona’s summer heat. Both human snowbirds
from Minnesota and other bone-chilling climates
and actual birds escaping from the snow enjoy
Cochise County’s weather.
You can stop at one of the area’s orchards. They
grow apples, peaches, pecans and other fruits and
vegetables, and they love to welcome visitors with
apple festivals, sweet corn extravaganzas and peach
mania!
That high desert climate has also attracted
more wine growers. Now, alongside the orchards,
wine growing operations have been sprouting
up in northern Cochise County. Vineyards are
producing Rhone varietals that are gaining in
popularity. Two wine-tasting rooms have recently
opened in downtown historic Willcox.
Kartchner Caverns State Park is one of
Cochise County’s greatest natural wonders.
In the end, if you want to recharge, relax, reflect
When you tell people you’re going to Arizona,
they picture in their minds intense heat, sandy
deserts, occasional scrub brush and cactus.
However, those of you who have been to Arizona know
that there is so much more to the Valley of the Sun. The
East Valley is home to sophisticated culture, year-round
sports events, diverse entertainment and interesting
historical sites.
Visit the Apache Trail in Apache Junction for a look
at what Old West living was like, or view the dramatic
mountains and wildlife in the lakes just to the north of
there. Mesa offers something for everyone, with great
RV Safety Tips
Don’t let preventable mishaps keep you from enjoying your travel
Courtesy of Geico Insurance
Size Matters
Many accidents happen as a result of the
additional size and weight of an RV. Misjudging
the height of an overpass can be prevented by
keeping a note of your vehicle’s height posted on
your dashboard for a handy reminder. Look for a
road atlas created especially for RVers so you can
plan ahead for off-highway routes.
Maintenance is Essential
If you’ve done all your maintenance and followed
a checklist before your trip begins, you’ll avoid
most surprises. Some of those checklist items are:
1. Inspect all belts and hoses for cracking and
replace where needed.
2. Check headlights, tail lights, turn signals.
3. Check tires for correct air pressure and signs of
wear, including your spare.
4. Check any hitch or towing equipment.
5. Check fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.
6. Clean the cooking vent hood to avoid grease
fires.
7. Make sure food and cookware is safely secured
in kitchen cabinets.
Stuff Happens
If you do have a breakdown, be sure you’ve made
a plan for what to do. Carry a cell phone and
know what emergency numbers to call. Leave
an itinerary with a friend or family member and
check in with them periodically.
Make adjustments for weather. It’s better to lose
part of a day’s travel than put yourself at risk on
treacherous road conditions.
Use common sense, wear safety belts and be aware
of your surroundings. Drive rested and you’ll
enjoy the trip every time.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Arizona Home
Frank Lloyd Wright began building Taliesin
West in 1937 as his personal winter home,
studio, and architectural campus. Located on the
beautiful Sonoran desert in the foothills of the
McDowell Mountains in northeast Scottsdale, the
site offers a broad range of guided public tours.
Visitors experience firsthand Wright’s brilliant
ability to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces.
Public, group or private tours may be taken
in various portions of the house, school and
surrounding land. View Wright’s office and home,
furnished as it was while he lived and worked
there. Some of the more in-depth tours will allow
you to see the students’ “Desert Shelters”, built as
learning tools that actually house the students. An
evening tour will show off the amazing views of
the Valley of the Sun from this hillside treasure,
with the city
lights sparkling
in the distance.
Taliesin West is
located at 12621
North Frank
Lloyd Wright
Blvd., Scottsdale,
AZ 85259. The
entrance is at the Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. and
Cactus Rd. intersection. Call (480) 860-2700 ext.
For big city attractions without the big
city congestion of Phoenix, Tucson
gives its visitors a truly Southwestern
experience. A stay in and around Tucson is
sure to keep everyone entertained. Visitors
of all ages enjoy hands-on museums, exciting
attractions, enriching culture and heritage
themed events and natural beauty. Those
who love the outdoors enjoy bird watching,
stargazing, rock climbing, mountain biking and
golf.
South of town, you can wander the historic
town of Tubac, visiting galleries and shops to
see local treasures. Tumacacori, just next door
on Route 19, is the ruin of a Franciscan mission
built in 1795. Now an National Historic Park,
you can tour the old church and grounds.
If you want to venture west, Ajo is a little
western town with charm and history. A former
mining town, Ajo boasts a museum and copper
mine pit that stretches 1.5 miles long. It’s also
right next to the Organ Pipe Cactus National
Monument, a natural wonder of cactus and
wild desert beauty.
West
Coast
If you’re looking for water sports in the desert, you’re
sure to find some fun in the West Coast of Arizona.
The Colorado River runs along this western border,
providing life-sustaining water and recreation to all who
visit. But there’s much more to this area.
In the northwest corner of the state is Kingman, the “Heart
of Historic Route 66.” More than 60 of Kingman’s buildings
are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Imperial National Wildlife Refuge protects wildlife
habitat along 30 miles of the lower Colorado River in
Arizona and California, including the last unchannelized
section before the river enters Mexico. The river and its
associated backwater lakes and wetlands are a green oasis,
contrasting with the surrounding desert mountains.
Founded as Mineral City, Ehrenberg lies along the
Colorado River. The town was later renamed for Herman
Ehrenberg, a surveyor and mining engineer. Mike
Goldwater, grandfather of former Sen. Barry Goldwater,
established a mercantile store and warehouse here.
Closer in, you can attend NFL games at the
retractable field stadium where the Arizona
Cardinals play, or NHL games, just next door, to
cheer on the Phoenix Coyotes. The Sun Cities,
Surprise and El Mirage all offer great choices in
animals from around the world at the Wildlife
World Zoo.
In all cities within the West Valley you can find fine
For the most volume of natural beauty in the smallest area,
this is where you need to go. Perched on the edge of the
Mogollon Rim, you can see snow-topped mountains and
blooming spring flowers in the same glance.
There are pine trees and high desert cacti
growing on the same hillside. Running water
and the bright Arizona sunshine combine for a
magnificent outdoor experience.
Bring your fishing gear, canoe and hiking boots
with you, but be sure to take advantage of local
festivals, including those of the White Mountain
Apache tribe whose reservation is in this area and
who own and operate the Hon-Dah Resort and
Casino in Pinetop. Take a trip to Strawberry to
see the Strawberry Schoolhouse - built in 1885
- the oldest school building in the state. Nearby
Pine has a few more tourist amenities and
shopping, and Payson is almost a big city, with
big stores and medical facilities.
experience. At Fossil Creek, pretend you’re a
conferences/events hub and the premier entertainment
center for the White Mountains region.
country, Latin or oldies music. Up and coming standup
comedians are featured every Monday night at our
Munday Funday Comedy Club. For Special Events, Hon-
Dah has something for everyone: Pow Wow in the Pines
From early days in Arizona’s territorial
history, Yuma was considered to be the
gateway to California. A settlement was
built along with a bridge over the Colorado River
and history was made.
Today, Yuma is a bustling community that
carefully preserves its history and offers a
comfortable winter climate for RVers to enjoy.
The river makes water sports and fishing
convenient and varied wildlife refuges and parks
offer great ways to get outdoor exercise. For
indoor fun there are nearby casinos, shopping
and some wonderful historical attractions that
demonstrate the role Yuma played in bringing
commerce through Arizona.
Wellton, to the east of Yuma is a smaller city with
its own charms. There are plenty of local festivals
and small-town activities to keep you busy while
you enjoy the mild temperatures and easy lifestyle.
Yuma’s Old Plank Road
by Ellen Bilbrey, PIO, Arizona State Parks
Yuma is of Arizona’s richest historic destinations, but few people
realize the fascinating stories that can be uncovered at the new
Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area on the Colorado River.
Spanish explorers Hernando de Alarcon and Coronado crossed the
Colorado here in 1540 looking for the Seven Cities of Cibola, Padre
Kino used the crossing in 1683 and later established a mission,
countless gold-seeking immigrants crossed here in the mid 1800’s
until placer gold was found in the river and cemented Yuma’s place
in history. The gold boom established Yuma as a critical seaport with
paddle wheelers steaming up the Colorado. The
crossing point was so critical that in 1864 the
U.S. Army built Fort Yuma so supplies could
be brought into the southwest for the fourteen
forts scattered across the territory.
Travelers today fly down the smooth
highway past Yuma because nothing seems
interesting from the car windows. But
surprisingly the road they travel is one of the most important roads
in Arizona’s history. In 1915 Model T drivers were clamoring to get
to California by crossing the new bridge over the mighty Colorado,
but California’s Algondones Dunes just to the west was a formidable
barrier to get to San Diego so the Chamber of Commerce came up with
a novel idea to solve this tourism problem. They would build a plank
road across the dunes. In 1914 they donated 13,100 oak planks to
build the first sand dune crossing and it was completed in 1915. But
shifting sands quickly thwarted that effort, so in 1916 another plank
road was built in 8 foot by 12 foot wooden sections so that the new
motor cars could drive at 10-miles-per hour down what riders called
“Old Shaky.” The 6.7-mile, one-lane road had pullouts for passing
and east bound cars would leave on even hours and west bound on
odd hours to handle the 30 cars per day going over the road by 1925.
By 1926 a paved, two-lane state highway was built and later the I-8
freeway.
So if you find yourself sailing through
Yuma on I-8, take the time visit the Heritage
Area and the Yuma Crossing State Historic Park
to see a portion of the old plank road from
“Old Shaky” that has been preserved there.
Appreciate the fact that you don’t have to cross
the dunes hoping that a sandstorm wouldn’t
strand you in the desert and that the Ocean-to-Ocean bridge made
that river crossing safe for cars. The four centuries of history at this
Colorado River crossing, Fort Yuma, the Yuma Territorial Prison State
Park and the Colorado wetlands await travelers who seek the stories
that bring color and meaning in short slices of time and bring depth to
travels that otherwise are just a fly-by on a freeway.
