08 chief executive’s <strong>report</strong><br />

It is with both trepidation and pride that<br />

I present for the Members’ consideration<br />

the <strong>93rd</strong> Annual Report of Australian<br />

Swimming Incorporated.<br />

The trepidation comes from the awesome<br />

responsibility the Board and the ASI o÷ce<br />

has in keeping Australian Swimming in the<br />

vanguard of sport not only in this great country<br />

but also on the world stage. The pride comes<br />

from the fact that in <strong>2001</strong>–<strong>2002</strong> Australian<br />

Swimming has been able to achieve<br />

remarkable success over a wide range of<br />

activities and projects. These activities and<br />

projects relate directly to the Australian<br />

Swimming Strategic Plan, which was adopted<br />

by the Board in June <strong>2001</strong>. This Annual Report<br />

is our <strong>report</strong> card on those activities and<br />

projects. This <strong>report</strong> card will again confirm<br />

that Australian Swimming is achieving both<br />

in the competitive arena and in the daily grind<br />

of sports administration.<br />

The Australian Swimming Strategic Plan<br />

contains six Key Performance Areas. These Key<br />

Performance Areas and the major achievements<br />

within each for <strong>2001</strong>–<strong>2002</strong> are:<br />

Administration and<br />

Management<br />

R Memoranda of Understanding with State<br />

Swimming Associations negotiated<br />

R Memorandum of Understanding with ASCTA<br />

under negotiation<br />

R An expression of interest submitted for the<br />

2007 FINA World Championship<br />

R A formal bid submitted for the 2003–04 FINA<br />

World Cup Series<br />

R Introduction of the State ED’s electronic<br />

newsletter<br />

R Introduction of the monthly E-Swimmer<br />

magazine (on ASI website)<br />

R Joint ASI–ASCTA Board meeting held in<br />

May <strong>2001</strong><br />

R ASI Swimming Club Manual launched and<br />

distribution commenced<br />

R ASI Member Protection Policy adopted by<br />

the Board<br />

R Development of 4 year budgets<br />

R An operating surplus of $5 000.00<br />

High Performance<br />

R Thirteen gold medals won at the <strong>2001</strong> FINA<br />

World Championships<br />

R Wins both the Mens and Womens<br />

competitions at the Goodwill Games<br />

R High Performance Director appointed<br />

in February <strong>2002</strong><br />

R Head Coaches appointed on a team by<br />

team basis<br />

R Number one nation at the FINA World Short<br />

Course Championships in Moscow<br />

R Funding agreements with all State<br />

Institutes/Academies of Sport<br />

R Direct athlete support maintained<br />

R Athlete and coach prize money and incentive<br />

payments increased<br />

R All Goodwill Games prize money distributed<br />

to athletes and coaches<br />

R Support of Athletes With a Disability within<br />

the Telstra Dolphins structure<br />

R Indigenous Scholarship Program supported
