<strong>2001</strong> Telstra Swimmer Of The Year<br />

10 December <strong>2002</strong>, Melbourne<br />

The <strong>2001</strong> Telstra Swimmer of the Year was<br />

conducted to acknowledge the achievements<br />

of members of the Telstra Dolphins Australian<br />

Swim Team throughout <strong>2001</strong>. The dinner was a<br />

black tie a≈air held in the Savoy Ballroom at<br />

the Grand Hyatt, Melbourne. Ken Sutcli≈e and<br />

Nicole Livingstone of the Nine Network hosted<br />

the evening. The production was coordinated<br />

by Great Big Events and featured a live<br />

performance of the Scared Weird Little Guys.<br />

The national winners of the 12th <strong>annual</strong> Telstra<br />

Swimmer of the Years Awards were announced<br />

in front of 400 people consisting of VIP’s,<br />

swimmers, coaches, past <strong>swimming</strong> legends,<br />

media and other members of the <strong>swimming</strong><br />

community. The evening brought together<br />

Australia’s elite swimmers and <strong>swimming</strong><br />

community in order to honour the<br />

extraordinary achievements of the Australian<br />

swimmers and coaches in <strong>2001</strong>.<br />

Feedback from sponsors, athletes, coaches,<br />

VIP’s and others that attended was extremely<br />

positive. A special thanks to Telstra for their<br />

personnel and financial assistance to ensure<br />

the night was an outstanding success.<br />

<strong>2002</strong> FINA World Short Course Championships<br />

<strong>2002</strong> Telstra Australian Championships<br />

18–23 March <strong>2002</strong>, Brisbane<br />

The <strong>2002</strong> Telstra Australian Championships<br />

were held at Chandler Aquatic Centre, Brisbane<br />

and doubled as the selection trials for teams to<br />

attend the <strong>2002</strong> Oceania Championships, <strong>2002</strong><br />

Pan Pacific Championships and <strong>2002</strong><br />

Commonwealth Games.<br />

The event was broadcast on Channel Nine live<br />

around Australia every evening. This provided<br />

the sport and swimmers with an excellent<br />

opportunity to promote <strong>swimming</strong> to the<br />

Australian public, as well as current and<br />

potential sponsors. The media were all over<br />

the event with hundreds of articles written<br />

throughout the week leading up to and during<br />

the event. Channel Nine recorded excellent<br />

ratings for the event with the sport holding<br />

their own in the prime time slot. The ASI<br />

website www.<strong>swimming</strong>.org.au had more<br />

than 5.5 million hits with two days recording<br />

more than 1 million hits. ASI is particularly<br />

grateful to Queensland Swimming for its<br />

support of the event.<br />

<strong>2002</strong> Australian Age Championships<br />

9–13 April <strong>2002</strong>, Sydney<br />

By far ASI’s biggest event, the <strong>2002</strong> Australian<br />

Age Championships were held at the Sydney<br />

Aquatic Centre, Homebush Bay with almost<br />

1500 athletes taking part. The event was part<br />

of the selection trials for the <strong>2002</strong> Oceania<br />

Championships.<br />

The Championships produced many<br />

outstanding swims. A total of 19 Australian Age<br />

and two Australian records were broken at the<br />

meet. The point score was once again<br />

dominated by Queensland clubs with three of<br />

the top five clubs from Queensland. Chandler<br />

Club (QLD) won the Premier Club and<br />

Queensland took out the Premier State point<br />

scores. All results were posted on the
