<strong>The</strong> Zoological Society <strong>of</strong> London (ZSL) was founded <strong>in</strong> 1826, <strong>and</strong> is an<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational scientific, <strong>conservation</strong> <strong>and</strong> educational organisation. Our mission is<br />

to achieve <strong>and</strong> promote the worldwide <strong>conservation</strong> <strong>of</strong> animals <strong>and</strong> their habitats.<br />

ZSL runs London Zoo <strong>and</strong> Whipsnade Wild Animal Park, carries out scientific<br />

research through the Institute <strong>of</strong> Zoology, <strong>and</strong> is actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> field<br />

<strong>conservation</strong> through our <strong>in</strong>ternational field <strong>conservation</strong> programmes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> aim <strong>of</strong> this Conservation Report series is to <strong>in</strong>form people <strong>of</strong> the work that ZSL<br />

<strong>and</strong> its partners do <strong>in</strong> field <strong>conservation</strong>. Results <strong>of</strong> work carried out <strong>in</strong> field projects<br />

are <strong>of</strong>ten only reported <strong>in</strong> unpublished technical reports. This series seeks to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

this grey literature <strong>in</strong>to a more accessible form to help guide <strong>conservation</strong><br />

management <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>form policy. <strong>The</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tention is to report on particular<br />

achievements, especially where lessons learnt form the field can benefit <strong>other</strong><br />

<strong>conservation</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. <strong>The</strong> results <strong>of</strong> field surveys will also be dissem<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

through this series.<br />

<strong>The</strong> primary audience for these reports is ZSL's <strong>conservation</strong> partners. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude government departments, private sector actors <strong>and</strong> <strong>conservation</strong><br />

organisations. In some cases this type <strong>of</strong> report will also be useful for local<br />

communities. This series will be published <strong>in</strong> English <strong>and</strong> <strong>other</strong> languages as<br />

appropriate. Because only a limited number <strong>of</strong> hard copies will be produced,<br />

electronic versions <strong>of</strong> all these reports will be available through the ZSL library.<br />
