"No. But -- it would have worked out eventually. I mean, the only person I saw during that time was somebody I wasn't serious about at all, it was just sort of a fun thing, so I always figured we'd get back together eventually, and we would have, except that he came in and sort of pounced on her, and when they finally found out that they were dating --" "Oh, did they keep it a secret?" She was starting to see his side again, he could tell. "Yeah. I mean, sort of. For, like, a week." He looked at her hopefully, but she was wearing a relatively dubious expression. "Anyway, I found out, and I told her basically that I didn't think we could be friends if she was going to date him, of all people, so she broke up with him, actually, and then we were kind of getting back together -- we went to the prom, and did a couple of things together -- and then all of a sudden, he leaves town in this big dramatic gesture, and she leaves with him." He cleared his throat. "They got back in the fall, and they apologized and everything for what happened, but it was really hard for me to get over, you know?" She was nodding slowly, but looking at him a little sideways. "So anyway, they broke up after her dad died, and she came out here with me, but at New Year's, she just totally freaked out and went back to the East Coast. I went to try and get her back, but she didn't want to come. Furthermore, the best friend punched me in the jaw." "I can't believe that," Megan said, stunned. "I know. He just stepped right up and --" "No, no. Did you say that they apologized to you?" He blinked. "Yeah." She raised her eyebrows. "For what?" Dawson stared back at her. She was absolutely incredulous. She had no idea. "For sneaking around behind my back. For -- for betraying me completely." Megan put her drink down, turned to fully face Dawson on the couch, and took a deep breath. "You're saying that this girl was in love with you for a long time, and you totally ignored her and went out with somebody else." "Well --" "Yes or no?" "I guess so, yes." "And then after your other relationship ended, you decided you'd date the faithful friend after all, but that sputtered from the very beginning." "I -- pretty much, yes."
"And eventually she made the last attempt to get back together with you, and you turned her down flat." "Yes." "And you went off and had some kind of fling, which didn't count as dating anybody else?" "Basically." "Basically?" "Yes." "But then she met and got involved with somebody else who happened to be your best friend, and the two of them told you how they felt, at which point you threatened to dump them both if they didn't break up." "I wouldn't put it that way," Dawson protested weakly. "But did you do it that way?" "I guess so, yes." "And at that point, they actually did break up, and you tried to pressure her into coming back to you even though you knew that her heart wasn't really in it." "I didn't know that her heart wasn't in it." "You knew she would have been with somebody else if you hadn't blackmailed her, though, right?" This had turned thoroughly ugly, and was beginning to take on a strange, out-of-body feeling. "If you want to put it that way, I guess that would be . . . one way of describing it." "And eventually she went off with him, which, let's face it, she probably wanted to do all along. Then they break up while she's in the middle of an emotional crisis, and you seize on the opportunity to start things up with her again, but -- shock of shocks -- it doesn't work out because, again, let's face it, she probably wanted the best friend all along. So you follow her across the country in yet another attempt to get your way, and when you don't get your way, you sulk back here, where you've been moping about this ever since." He felt like he'd been hit with a tranquilizer dart. "I -- I -- I --" "Frankly, I would have popped you one, too." She stood up. "It was nice meeting you, Dawson."
