Look, I know you are just going to give this a glib answer but I have to ask anyway:
WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH GIRLS and SEX on this show?
I have watched since the first and there is a terrible stereotype this show reinforces about
female teens and sexuality.
Jen is a "bad" girl though we've seen very little indication of this. She's had sex with two
people in five years. In the first season, Virginal Dawson dropped her like a hot potato
when he found out she wasn't a virgin. Jen downward spiraled and was treated like a
pariah for partying and being sexual during the second season. This year, before being
blessed with Dawson's Big V she sleeps with someone who cheats on her.
Pacey lost his virginity "in a high-fantasy fashion" and while there were repercussions
FOR Tamara there really weren't any for him. In fact, he came out of it pretty well
considering. He was a legend at that school and went on to have love and sex with Andie.
Consequences for Andie? She lost her mind. She had sex and WENT CRAZY. And then
became promiscuous enough to sleep with her bunkmate at the Bed & Breakdown.
Joey, the ingénue, finally loses her virginity after making Pacey wait an absurd amount of
time. This is after she almost has sex with Jack and offers herself up without an ounce of
Potter pride to Dawson. Dawson shoots her down – quite cruelly – and behaves as though
she were demeaning herself. His one moment of clarity?
Before Joey gets to have sex she has to endure every person she knows asking her about
her sex life, a trip to Most Horrifying Family Planning Clinic In History (an incredibly
irresponsible move, writers!) and accusing Pacey of pressuring her while ignoring any
feelings he may be having about the whole situation.
In fact, Joey only has sex with Pacey after Dawson practically gives her his express
permission. Add to that the fact that Paul Stupin stated Joey's virginity was the entire
community's business and that her "morning after" was not only awkward but ridiculous.
Pacey had been a great boyfriend up to this point but the morning after he acted
completely out of character. She then was “Late” – again in an episode that was
offensive, predictable and poorly handled. God forbid Joey enjoy sex responsibly with
her boyfriend without Dawson or "very special episode of" being attached to it!
Now, Dear Precious Dawson is having sex with Jen. I have no problem with this in
theory but I've just read spoilers dealing with the morning afterward awkwardness and it
made me so angry I had to write to tell you.
I know it's his creek but his morning after is so much sweeter than Joey's it makes me
angry. I doubt he will face the many "dangers" of sex girls in his world face. He won't go
crazy, Jen won't be an asshole, and he won't have a pregnancy scare or pay a visit to Most
Horrifying Family Planning Clinic In History. Dawson doesn't feel the need to get
anyone's permission or approval. Of course, he will have to ease over Jen "the slut"

Lindley because she assumes she’s not worthy of a relationship with someone as great as
our Dawson!
So, I guess my question is: Do the writers understand the outdated and offensive social
codes they reinforce and encourage by making sex more traumatic for girls?
Wiki Note: I have no memory of the spoilers that lead to this insane (but largely true)
diatribe!
