Aluminum Can Roundup in<br />

conjunction with <strong>the</strong> ACBC<br />

(Aluminum Cans for<br />

Burned Children) <strong>of</strong> Northwest<br />

Ohio.<br />

These cans will be recycled<br />

and all proceeds benefit<br />

<strong>the</strong> children admitted to<br />

<strong>the</strong> burn unit at Mercy St.<br />

Vincent Medical Center.<br />

at Glenwood Elementary on<br />

Friday, <strong>April</strong> 20, until 7<br />

A “Home Grown” Green<br />

Energy event will be held at<br />

<strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> Dan Kronfield,<br />

¼ mile west <strong>of</strong> Route 25,<br />

on Saturday, <strong>April</strong> 21, from<br />

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.<br />

Energy Department and<br />

ADG Electric. ADG has<br />

done <strong>the</strong> solar installations<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Toledo Airport, Toledo<br />

Museum, and University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Toledo’s Scott Park campus.<br />

In addition, Thayer<br />

Chevrolet will have a<br />

Chevrolet Volt and a Scion<br />

plug-in vehicle for inspection.<br />

Jim Young, from Xunlight,<br />

will have an exhibit<br />

<strong>of</strong> solar panels. Don Stump<br />

from Home Depot will talk<br />

about Eco friendly products,<br />

such as energy efficient<br />

annual Honors Program Symposium<br />

and Medallion Ceremony<br />

on Friday, <strong>April</strong> 20.<br />

The Honors Program<br />

Symposium and Medallion<br />

Ceremony will occur from 9<br />

a.m. to noon, in Founders<br />

Hall on <strong>the</strong> campus on Oregon<br />

Road in <strong>Perrysburg</strong><br />

Township. The event is free<br />

and open to <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

academic conference, Owens’<br />

Honors Program Symposium<br />

and Medallion Ceremony<br />

will feature oral presentations<br />

by students on several topic<br />

areas, including intellectual-<br />

ism, applied math and social<br />

science, medical issues, critical<br />

thinking, business, literature,<br />

international affairs and<br />

Shakespeare, among o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Each presentation is a collaborative<br />

effort between <strong>the</strong><br />

Honors Program student and<br />

an Owens faculty member.<br />

Program will recognize five<br />

students for <strong>the</strong>ir educational<br />

success and leadership with<br />

<strong>the</strong> bestowing <strong>of</strong> an Owens<br />

Honors Program medallion.<br />

The five students being recognized<br />

for <strong>the</strong> <strong>2012</strong> Spring<br />

Semester are Geraldine Davis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Toledo, Andrew Hartke <strong>of</strong><br />

Oregon, Alexandra Hill <strong>of</strong><br />

Gibsonburg, Adam Masters<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Perrysburg</strong> and Jason Saxton<br />

<strong>of</strong> Toledo.<br />

The Honors Program at<br />

Owens was founded with <strong>the</strong><br />

overall mission <strong>of</strong> providing a<br />

challenging educational<br />

opportunity, above and<br />

beyond <strong>the</strong> standard curriculum,<br />

for exceptional students<br />

who strive for academic<br />

excellence. More than 100<br />

students are members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

current Owens Honors Program<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Toledo-area and<br />

Findlay-area campuses.<br />

To be considered for<br />

admission into <strong>the</strong> selective<br />

program, a currently enrolled<br />

student must have a minimum<br />

3.2 grade point average<br />

with 12 credits completed at<br />

Owens. A new student must<br />

have achieved a high school<br />

3.2 grade point average or be<br />

enrolled as a post secondary<br />

enrollment option student.<br />

Additionally, applicants must<br />

have two recommendations<br />

from faculty members.<br />

Honors Program students<br />

must complete a total <strong>of</strong> 15<br />

credit hours <strong>of</strong> honors courses,<br />

which includes nine credit<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> elective honors<br />

courses and two core courses<br />

titled Introduction to Critical<br />

Thinking and Honors Great<br />

Readings: Ancient World<br />

through <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages. To<br />

graduate as an Honors Scholar<br />

and receive <strong>the</strong> Honors<br />

Program medallion, a student<br />

must earn a cumulative 3.5<br />

grade point average and complete<br />

an honors portfolio<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y engage in directed<br />

research or service learning<br />

around essential questions or<br />

<strong>the</strong>mes appropriate to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

program <strong>of</strong> study as part <strong>of</strong> a<br />

capstone project, among<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r criteria.<br />

In addition, Owens Honors<br />

Program graduates are<br />

able to continue <strong>the</strong>ir educational<br />

pursuits at Bowling<br />

Green State University or <strong>the</strong><br />

University <strong>of</strong> Toledo as <strong>the</strong><br />

academic institutions have in<br />

place seamless transfer agreements<br />

between <strong>the</strong> respective<br />

Honors Programs.<br />
