beverage can round up April 20
Rossford Cub Scout
Pack 43 will participate in
the 14th annual Earth Day
Aluminum Can Roundup in
conjunction with the ACBC
(Aluminum Cans for
Burned Children) of Northwest
Ohio.
These cans will be recycled
and all proceeds benefit
the children admitted to
the burn unit at Mercy St.
Vincent Medical Center.
Cans can be dropped off
at Glenwood Elementary on
Friday, April 20, until 7
p.m. Containers will be
located in the back parking
lot area closest to the playground.
Motorists are reminded
to watch for students if
dropping off during school
hours.
Green Energy event set for April 21
A “Home Grown” Green
Energy event will be held at
the home of Dan Kronfield,
14125 Five Point Road, 1-
¼ mile west of Route 25,
on Saturday, April 21, from
11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Exhibits will be presented
by students from Penta
Career Center ’s Green
Energy Department and
ADG Electric. ADG has
done the solar installations
at the Toledo Airport, Toledo
Museum, and University
of Toledo’s Scott Park campus.
In addition, Thayer
Chevrolet will have a
Chevrolet Volt and a Scion
plug-in vehicle for inspection.
Jim Young, from Xunlight,
will have an exhibit
of solar panels. Don Stump
from Home Depot will talk
about Eco friendly products,
such as energy efficient
lighting.
Visitors can learn more
about off grid, on grid, and
wind turbine systems, how
to be eco friendly and get
energy from the sun and/or
wind.

Owens to host annual honors program
symposium and medallion ceremony
Owens Community College
students pursuing academic
studies at the highest
level will have the opportunity
to showcase their research
and creative work in multiple
disciplines as the academic
institution hosts its second
annual Honors Program Symposium
and Medallion Ceremony
on Friday, April 20.
The Honors Program
Symposium and Medallion
Ceremony will occur from 9
a.m. to noon, in Founders
Hall on the campus on Oregon
Road in Perrysburg
Township. The event is free
and open to the public.
“Owens Community College
is extremely proud to
once again host an event
which affords students the
opportunity to share their academic
findings with both the
campus community and the
general public through oral
presentations,” said Dr. Russell
Bodi, Owens professor of
English and Honors Program
director. “The students participating
in the second annual
Honors Program Symposium
and Medallion Ceremony are
leaders who have challenged
their intellectual growth at the
highest level. The college and
the Honors Program is honored
to recognize them on
their accomplishments.”
Mirroring a professional
academic conference, Owens’
Honors Program Symposium
and Medallion Ceremony
will feature oral presentations
by students on several topic
areas, including intellectual-
ism, applied math and social
science, medical issues, critical
thinking, business, literature,
international affairs and
Shakespeare, among others.
Each presentation is a collaborative
effort between the
Honors Program student and
an Owens faculty member.
Students from presenting
papers and their topics as part
of the academic symposium
are Adam Masters, “Outsourcing
and America;” Jasin
Sosbe, “Housing Bubble:
Boom or Bust,” and Rajesh
Felix, “The Machiavellian
Iago: The Fox and the Lion.”
In addition to the oral presentations,
the Owens Honors
Program will recognize five
students for their educational
success and leadership with
the bestowing of an Owens
Honors Program medallion.
The five students being recognized
for the 2012 Spring
Semester are Geraldine Davis
of Toledo, Andrew Hartke of
Oregon, Alexandra Hill of
Gibsonburg, Adam Masters
of Perrysburg and Jason Saxton
of Toledo.
The Honors Program at
Owens was founded with the
overall mission of providing a
challenging educational
opportunity, above and
beyond the standard curriculum,
for exceptional students
who strive for academic
excellence. More than 100
students are members of the
current Owens Honors Program
on the Toledo-area and
Findlay-area campuses.
To be considered for
admission into the selective
program, a currently enrolled
student must have a minimum
3.2 grade point average
with 12 credits completed at
Owens. A new student must
have achieved a high school
3.2 grade point average or be
enrolled as a post secondary
enrollment option student.
Additionally, applicants must
have two recommendations
from faculty members.
Honors Program students
must complete a total of 15
credit hours of honors courses,
which includes nine credit
hours of elective honors
courses and two core courses
titled Introduction to Critical
Thinking and Honors Great
Readings: Ancient World
through the Middle Ages. To
graduate as an Honors Scholar
and receive the Honors
Program medallion, a student
must earn a cumulative 3.5
grade point average and complete
an honors portfolio
where they engage in directed
research or service learning
around essential questions or
themes appropriate to their
program of study as part of a
capstone project, among
other criteria.
In addition, Owens Honors
Program graduates are
able to continue their educational
pursuits at Bowling
Green State University or the
University of Toledo as the
academic institutions have in
place seamless transfer agreements
between the respective
Honors Programs.
