Herringshaw
appointed as
commissioner
By Beth Church
From a field of six candidates,
Doris Herringshaw
was selected last Thursday by
the Wood County Republican
Central Committee to be the
newest Wood County commissioner.
She replaces Tim Brown,
who recently resigned following
his election as a state
representative.
“The Wood County commissioners
have a long history
of working together to do
what is best for the county,”
Mrs. Herringshaw said. “I am
excited and honored to be
appointed. I am certain Tim
and I will communicate on a
regular basis to make certain
Wood County has a strong
voice in Columbus.”
The longtime Wood
County resident campaigned
for commissioner last year,
defeating four other candidates
in the primary, but losing
to incumbent Democrat
Joel Kuhlman in the general
election.
Last week, the Republican
central committee met with
Mrs. Herringshaw–the lone
female applicant–and six
other candidates who applied
for the appointment. They
were Dave Beaverson of
Perrysburg, Phil Bollin of
Perrysburg, Roger Bostdorff
of Luckey, John Cuckler of
Bowling Green, Terry
Krukemyer of Pemberville
and Bob Watrol of Rossford.
She received a
majority of votes
from the committee
during the first
round of balloting.
Mrs. Herringshaw
has countywide
experience
working with and
promoting the agricultural
community,
jobs and strengthening
the county’s
economy.
“Wood County
is a good place to
work, get an education, raise
a family and enjoy life. As
commissioner, I’m excited to
be part of the board to help
move the county into the
future,” she said.
“While this involves dedication
and passion I have for
the county, some of the issues
I see the commissioners
working on include continuing
to develop a strong infrastructure,
job creation and
training along with economic
development.
“I have a particular interest
in small business and their
growth in the county, so I
hope to pursue that interest in
the future,” she added.
Mrs. Herringshaw of
Bowling Green has a bachelor’s
degree in education
from Kent State University,
and graduate degrees from
University in career and technology
Casino taxes shared with schools Casino revenue to area school districts
By Beth Church
The first distribution of
revenue from the new Ohio
casinos has been announced,
and Rossford Schools will
receive $38,931.
The Ohio Department of
Taxation released the list of
revenues for school districts
last week. [see box for area
schools’ distributions]
School District Treasurer
James Rossler Jr. noted the
amount is nowhere near the
original estimate of $237,000
when the issue of legalized
gambling was proposed to
Ohio voters.
“It doesn’t even pay for a
custodian,” he said. “Or just
the salary portion of a firstyear
teacher.”
Comparing it to lottery
revenue, Mr. Rossler said he
was never relying upon casino
revenue to be an answer to
the state’s school funding
problems.
“It’s by no means going to
make us rich,” he added. “I’ve
always had a wait and see attitude.
To prepare for less, and
hope I’m wrong.”
The school distributions
are based on student enrollment,
and schools received
$20.98 per student, the treasurer
explained.
Mr. Rossler is concerned
that the large jackpots and
grand revenue of casinos
present citizens with a rich
image.
“It gives a false sense that
the schools are getting a huge
windfall, and that’s just not
true,” he said.
Hollywood Casino Toledo,
which is located at Rossford’s
border on Miami Street,
reported adjusted gross revenue
(AGR) of $14.1 million
in December.
AGR is the money
received by the casino operator
less winnings paid to
patrons. Since the Toledo
casino opened last May, it has
taken in $117.9 million AGR,
according to the Ohio
Department of Taxation.
The “table drop” of its 80
table games has been $111.7
million, and the “coin in” on
its 2,000 slot machines has
been more than $1 billion
since opening, according to
the state tax records.
Ohio public school districts
and community/charter
schools will receive two
annual distributions of casino
funds in January and August.
Mr. Rossler expects the
second distribution this year
to be similar to this month’s.
The current tax receipts
come from three casinos, as
Ohio’s fourth casino in
Cincinnati is not expected to
open until March.
“Even with another casino,
if it added a third more, that
would barely be $106,000,”
Mr. Rossler said.
Penta Career Center will
receive $80,353, and Penta
Treasurer Carrie Herringshaw
said it will slightly balance the
decrease in state funds.
“Penta plans to use the
funds to offset $1.2 million in
general fund revenue lost in
the past two years due to the
phase out of the tangible personal
property tax reimbursement,”
she explained.
The reduction in state revenue
was part of the budget
bill passed by the Ohio legislature
in June 2011.
According to the Ohio
Constitution, the state taxes
collected from the casinos are
split as follows:
•51 percent to counties,
•34 percent to school districts,
•5 percent to host cities,
•3 percent to state racing
commission to promote horse
racing with the pari-mutuel
system of wagering,
•2 percent to the Ohio law
enforcement training fund,
•2 percent to support the
department of alcohol and
drug addiction services to
alleviate problem gambling
and substance abuse, and
•3 percent to the Ohio
Casino Control Commission
to support its operations.
This month, Wood County
receives a distribution of
Open Letter
To Rossford Residents:
I live at 1 Riverside Drive,
across from Veterans Memorial
Park, and want to discuss
the pumping station and generator
for Jennings Road that
the Northwestern Water and
Sewer District plans to put on
my property.
I found out about the plans
in November. I contacted
NWSD and was told the project
would be relocated to the
park.
Then in December, I received
a letter and blueprints
showing the structure back on
my property. I spoke with the
mayor of Rossford, who indicated
they were still not sure
where the building was going
and were looking into alternatives.
The letter discusses these
alternatives, including an option
to have the structure built
in the park, with handicapped
accessible bathrooms.
However, on January 11,
workers came and staked out
the area for the project on my
front yard.
The most recent blueprints
show the structure being a 20
x 24 and 15 feet high.
The closest stake is 17 feet
from my front porch. Plans
also include a large generator
and accompanying equipment.
My parents Lee and Margaret
Knorek built this house
in 1947.
I grew up here and inherited
the house when my
mother passed away. My son
plans to take the home when I
am gone and my grandson
after him. This is a very important
home to our family.
My father, in good faith,
allowed the underground
water station to be built on the
property as a favor to Rossford.
He never imagined that
there would be an aboveground
building placed there.
This building will destroy my
property value and irrevocably
damage the yard and view
that I grew up with.
Please encourage the city
council members to place this
project in the park where it
will best serve the public.
“We are very proud to support
such a worthwhile program,”
said Michael
Romanowicz, president of the
Rossford Firefighters Association.
Aluminum Cans for
Burned Children is a special
aluminum can recycling program
conducted by northwest
Ohio firefighters and local
businesses.
Money raised through
ACBC buys non-medical
items for young patients at St.
Vincent Mercy Medical Centers
Burn Unit in Toledo.
These items might include
special protective clothing
that helps skin heal or bicycles
that help youngsters exercise
burned and injured
arms or legs.
Area residents and businesses
are encouraged to
bring their empty aluminum
beverage cans to the Rossford
Fire Station.
“We realize that we couldn’t
do this without the overwhelming
support of the
Rossford community. On behalf
of the Rossford Firefighters
Association, we thank our
community,” Mr. Romanowicz
said.
Rossford man arrested
for threats to officials
A Rossford man was arrested
last Friday and is
being held in Wood County
jail for threatening several
local officials.
Chad E. Cooper, 31,
Maple Street, was arrested
by Perrysburg Township police
and charged with intimidating
a prosecutor, a
third-degree felony.
Rossford city officials–
past and current–have received
numerous letters of
complaint and criticism
from Mr. Cooper.
Last summer, he was arrested
for criminal trespassing
after he allegedly was
found in Veterans Memorial
Park after the park closed.
He had been warned two
weeks previously for being
in the park after hours.
That case is pending in
Perrysburg Municipal
Court.
Mr. Cooper, an Owens
Community College security
officer, was arrested
around midnight Thursday
on campus while at work.
He is not a police officer
and does not carry a weapon
at the college.
He was transported to the
Wood County jail and held
on a $100,000 bond.
On Friday morning, at an
arraignment via video in
Perrysburg Municipal
Court, Acting Judge Mary
Grace Trimboli ordered the
bond continued with no 10
percent allowed.
A pre-trial hearing has
been scheduled for January
17, unless the suspect is
bound over by a grand jury
to Wood County Common
Pleas Court.
Brad Meyer, spokesman
for Owens Community College,
said Mr. Cooper has
been placed on leave until
further notice.
PEPA, the Family and Civic
Engagement Team for Perrysburg
schools, and the Going
the Extra Mile for Perrysburg
Kids event held this past summer.
Mr. Ohanian served two
terms on the Perrysburg
Board of Zoning Appeals, his
second term as chairman.
“I have practiced and tried
cases in many courts, and am
uniquely qualified to understand
how a court should be
run. As prosecutor, I work
closely with local law enforcement,
and am often the
first person they call when an
issue arises during an investigation,”
he explained.
“My unique experience allows
me to bring the perspective
of both the prosecuting
and defense attorney to the
bench, having run many jury
trials on both sides.”
“When a person appears in
front of a judge, it can be an
intimidating event. The public
deserves a judge who will
uphold the law, protecting the
constitution and citizens of
the State of Ohio, while treating
those that appear in court
with utmost respect and appropriate
compassion,” Mr.
Ohanian said.
“Whether a victim of a
crime, or a defendant charged
with an offense, the person
appearing in court needs to be
confident that the judge presiding
over their case has
ample experience to address
the issues presented.”
PET OF THE WEEK
Kelly: tricolor hound mix, female.
Hi, I'm Kelly. I just arrived here at the
Humane Society so the staff here is
still getting to know me. What they do
know is that I'm a very sweet little lady
and I get along really well with other
dogs. I have a big personality, but can
be a little shy around new people. Once
I get to know you, I don't want to leave
your side. I love to play with my toys
and other dogs. I would love to find
my forever home with someone who
will give me lots of attention and love. Stop out and meet me today, I
know we'll be best friends!
Please visit or call the Wood County Humane Society at 419-352-7339
to learn more about this great pet. All of our adoptable animals can be
viewed by visiting www.WoodCountyHumaneSociety.org.
Mat Notes
The American Heart Asso-
ciation’s 10th annual Na-
tional Wear Red Day is
February 1.
“Women, it’s time to stand
together in the fight for our
lives. Because heart disease is
our number one killer, affect-
ing more women than men.
Because it’s more deadly than
all forms of cancer combined.
Because women we love are
dying and many more are im-
pacted every day,” said
Allyson France, senior direc-
tor of the American Heart As-
sociation, Northwest Ohio
Division. “But the strength of
mothers, sisters, daughters
and friends fighting side by
side is more powerful than
any killer. For 10 years we
have fought, and saved the
lives of thousands of women.
We have proudly worn red,
shared our stories of survival
and begun to understand the
truth about women’s hearts
and how heart disease can be
prevented.”
Academy Award winning film
of the same name and the Phil
Stong novel, “State Fair” features
a beloved Rodgers &
Hammerstein score, including
songs like “It’s A Grand Night
For Singing,” “It Might As
Well Be Spring” and “That’s
For Me,” among others.
In late August 1946, the
Frake Family travels to the
Iowa State Fair for three days
of adventure and romance. Father
Abel Frake has hopes that
his boar, Blue Boy, will win a
prize; his wife Melissa is entering
her mincemeat pie. Daughter
Margy is upset with her
beau Harry’s plans for their
boring, staid farm life together
and son Wayne wants to finally
prove successful on the
Games Midway.
Once the family arrives at
the fair, Wayne meets Emily
Arden, a worldly Big Band
singer, and falls instantly in
love. Meanwhile, Melissa's
mincemeat pie has won a Blue
Ribbon. Margy meets Pat, a
handsome news reporter, and a
mutual attraction develops. On
the last day of the fair, Abel’s
boar, Blue Boy, competes for
the Blue Ribbon, Emily breaks
off the growing relationship
with Wayne, and Pat must
leave for a new job. Back
home, the family members become
local celebrities but the
children have still not fulfilled
their summer dreams. All will
end happily, however, in classic
romantic musical comedy
fashion. “State Fair” is directed
by Julie Zatko and Ryan
Mahaffey. Vocal direction is by
DJ Hiner, with choreography
by Karen Niewamdowski and
technical direction by Eddie
Czubinski.
The family friendly musical
runs Thursday, April 18,
through Sunday, April 21.
Thursday through Saturday
performances are at 7:30 p.m.,
with a Sunday matinee at 2
Career technical honor society taking shape at Penta
By Jane Maiolo
High achieving students
at Penta Career Center will
now have the opportunity to
become part of a unique
honor society.
The career center has
joined 3,400 schools and colleges
nationwide and overseas
who are members of the
National Technical Honor
Society (NTHS).
Begun in 1988, the NTHS
was started as a way to recognize
outstanding career
and technical students,
At the January 9 Penta
board meeting, instructors
Mindy Phillips and Sonia
Herman, who will serve as
co-advisors for the society,
spoke about the organization.
“We’re pretty excited,”
said Ms. Phillips. “We feel
we truly need to honor the
best of the best.”
She noted that the NTHS
mission is to “honor student
achievement and leadership,
promote educational excellence,
award scholarships
and enhance career opportunities
for its membership.”
She added, “It’s an elite
group, and we’re excited to
be a part of it.”
Ms. Phillips said the program
encourages higher student
achievement and
success.
She believes it will benefit
the career center by contributing
a strong, positive
school image and encouraging
service learning in the
community.
It also helps build and
maintain active partnerships
with local business and industry
