Mary Hanna to speak
in Legion series April 22
Perrysburg American
Legion will host Mary
Hanna as its next speaker on
Monday, April 22, at 7 p.m.,
at Schaller Memorial Hall,
130 West Indiana Avenue,
Perrysburg.
Ms. Hanna served in the
U.S. Air Force as a medical
specialist from 1968 to 1972.
She is a Vietnam veteran
who was assigned to the surgical
ward at Clark Air Base,
Republic of the Philippines.
She earned her bachelor’s
degree in psychology and
master’s degree in organization
development at Bowling
Green State University.
Ms. Hanna was awarded
the BGSU Alumni Community
Award in recognition of
her outstanding work on
behalf of our nation’s veterans
and her humanitarian
The annual Scouting for
Food event will be held in
Perrysburg April 13-20.

homes in the Fort Meigs
and Frank school areas on
Saturday, April 13. They
will return on Saturday,

David Hunter, an intervention
specialist at Perrysburg
High School and a
member of the Washington
Local board of education,
was among 11 school
board members in northwest
Ohio to receive the
award of achievement
from the Ohio School
Boards Association at the
OSBA’s Northwest Region
Spring Conference on
March 14.
More than 200 school
board members, administrators,
staff, students and
guests gathered at Penta
Career Center to recognize
individuals for their
achievements in education.
The Award of Achievement
is presented to Ohio
school board members in
recognition of their commitment
to training and
leadership activities on
their local boards of education
and in region and
statewide OSBA activities.
Award recipients are
board members who have
worked hard to become
better board members by
attending OSBA workshops
and conferences,
volunteering for service to
their association and working
on behalf of their own
board and community.
Completing his second
decade as a board member,
Mr. Hunter has served
Washington Local Schools
continuously since January,
1994. His current
term of office runs 2012 to
2015. During the past 20

years, Mr. Hunter has been
an active member and
leader of the board, serving
as either vice-president or
president for nine of those
years, most recently as the
2012 president. He has
served as a board liaison
on many district committees,
and for 18 years has
represented the board as its
voting delegate at state and
national conferences.
Mr. Hunter first became
involved in the Washington
Local School District as an
active parent and community
member. His years of
service on the Washington
Local education marketing
group began prior to his
election to the school
board as a representative
for Churchhill’s grocery
stores, and in 1993, he was
the recipient of the “Friend
of Education” Award presented
by the Teachers
Association of Washington
Local Schools (TAWLS).
His board service and
involvement with programs
and activities in
Washington Local
increased the love he
already held for education
and also helped to foster
that love in his children.
After working more
than 30 years in the grocery
business, Mr. Hunter
returned to college to
obtain his master’s degree
in special education. He is
now in his fifth year as an
intervention specialist at
Perrysburg Schools.
Also receiving an award
Her ultimate dream was
to compete in the
acclaimed Iditarod–the
Super Bowl of Sled dog
races. She was the first
legally blind person to
complete the Iditarod. Her
experiences and positive
outlook have been inspirational
to countless others.
The Sight Center ’s
EyEvent is an annual fundraiser
to provide services
for visually impaired and
blind individuals residing
in 16 counties of Northwest
Ohio.
This year’s event will
be held Thursday, May 2,
from 5:30 to 9 p.m., at
Hilton Garden Inn, Levis
Commons, Perrysburg.

updates from OSBA officials.

president, spoke briefly on
a proposal by Ohio Governor
John Kasich to eliminate
locally elected educational
service center board
members.
He noted that the governor
also would like to
eliminate the election of
school board members at
the local level.
“It’s critical that we
stick together and resist
this change,” he said.
Richard Lewis, OSBA
executive director, urged
members to become more
involved in the organization
by helping out at the
federal or state level.
“The OSBA needs you
to talk to the legislators,”
he said.
Michelle Francis,
deputy director of legislative
services, agreed.
She noted that the new
school funding reform plan
will impact more than 400
districts. “Some are not
getting any more money
and, in fact, some will see

EyEvent will continue the
mission of The Sight Center:
To enrich the lives of
individuals with low vision
by providing personalized
services.
The Sight Center of
Northwest Ohio is a nonprofit
agency with a distinguished
history of service
to persons who are visually
impaired or blind.
In 2012, nearly 900
children and adults were
served through the wide
range of programs and
services. The goal of this
event is to ensure these
individuals continue to live
independently and enjoy
the things in life which
provide meaning and substance.
