Owens CC hosts annual Motorsports Welding Night
Owens welding instructor Charlie Stewart shows the artistic
nature of welding.
Hundreds of racing car
and truck enthusiasts as well
as area residents interested in
welding careers turned out
April 4 for the annual Lincoln
Motorsports Welding Night
at Owens Community College.
Held in the School of
Technology, the event featured
an ARCA truck, a 305
Sprint car, trucks, stock racing
cars, drag racing cars and
drag bikes.
“Lincoln Motorsports
Welding Night is a great opportunity
for area residents to
check out some of the latest
advancements in competition
racing with more than 30
owners from around the region
showcasing their vehicles,”
said Jim Gilmore,
Owens chair of diesel and
welding technologies.
He noted that representatives
from local businesses
also were on hand to offer advice
to anyone choosing a career
in welding or the
automotive industry.
Local businesses included
Toledo Speedway, Norwalk
Raceway Park and Attica
Raceway Park.
Bowling Green State University’s
College of Technology
displayed two
all-electric, grand prix racing
vehicles.
Tony Palumbo, director of
the BGSU electric vehicle institute,
was eager to promote
the clean and renewable energy
technologies utilized in
the motorsports competitions.
A self-funded program,
motorsports utilizes students
from all disciplines, he explained.
It is a reality-based program
that provides students
experience with the operation
of a racing enterprise and research
and development of
green vehicles, he said.
“We need technology,
marketing, engineering, journalism
majors–anyone can
contribute,” he added.
The cost to assemble a vehicle
is $13,000, he said.
Also at the event were
representatives from Lincoln
Electric with virtual welding
machines.

The VersaFlip jar is the
third product in O-I’s Versa
platform. The first product
was the VersaFlow jar, a marinara-style
jar that was introduced
in partnership with
Walt Churchill’s Markets in
April 2012. A smaller version
of the jar, which was designed
for sauces and condiments,
launched locally in October
2012. Both jars feature a
built-in pour spout allowing
food products to flow more
smoothly with less mess and
less food waste.

Area motorcycle enthusiasts
interested in enhancing
their knowledge about safe
driving are invited to enroll in
upcoming Motorcycle Safety
Training classes offered
through Owens Community
College’s Workforce and
Community Services. The
classes will occur during the
months April through October.
Owens’ motorcycle safety
training is a three-day course,
which occurs on Thursday
evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.
Motorcycle Ohio is regarded
as the premier motorcycle
safety and education
program in the state, having
enhanced the riding skills of
over 115,000 motorcyclists
since its founding in 1987.
The organization has 22 permanent
training locations
throughout Ohio and one mobile
program, as well as a fleet
of 450 training motorcycles,
helmets and more than 250 instructors.
Motorcycle Ohio’s
Basic Rider Course or “Riding
and Street Skills” was first
made available to the public in
1988, while the Experienced
Rider Course was added in
1992. The Basic Rider Course
requires 16 hours of educational
learning. Four hours
maximize the steel.
Lincoln Motorsports
Welding Night was co-sponsored
by the Northwest Ohio
Chapter of the American
Welding Society and Lincoln
Electric Motorsports.

safety training classes
will occur within a classroom
at the College’s Arrowhead
Park Learning Center on Indian
Wood Circle in Maumee.
Classroom topics will include
introduction to motorcycling,
preparing to ride and street
strategies. The final 12 hours
will be held as part of practice
riding sessions at Owens’ 250
feet by 500 feet defensive
driving pad adjacent to the
Fire Science and Law Enforcement
Center in Perrysburg
Township.
The practice riding sessions
will feature educational
training within the areas of
motorcycle familiarization,
limited-space maneuvers,
using the friction zone, negotiating
curves, obstacles and
lane changes, avoiding hazards
and matching gears to
speed, among other topics.
Attendees will be provided
with motorcycles, helmets
and a student workbook.
Individuals must show proof
of a Motorcycle Endorsement
on their driver’s license or a
valid Temporary Motorcycle
permit in order to participate
in the course.
