Page 10 — April 10, 2013 — PERRYSBURG MESSENGER JOURNAL The Country Garden Club announces Phase 2 of its collaboration with the Perrysburg Heights Community Association (PHCA). PHCA has been successful in nurturing the 2,500-squarefoot organic vegetable garden that was started last spring as a result of a collaboration with the Country Garden Club, Perrysburg Garden Club, the City of Perrysburg, and The 577 Foundation. Each organization provided either financial assistance or the manpower and expertise that was needed to bring this project to fruition. In Phase 2, the Country Garden Club has donated $900 with an additional $600 from the Perrysburg Garden Club, which will be spent on a $1,500 rain water retention and distribution system which will be built on top of the garden’s adjacent garage. This improvement will reduce water cost and conserve water for reuse, and the garden’s bounty will again be distributed to local residents this summer. WCCOA announces winners of poetry contest The Wood County Committee on Aging, Inc. held its eighth annual poetry banquet and drew in 29 entries from throughout Wood County. Additional entries from Lucas, Henry and Sandusky counties added a new dimension to the contest this year. These entries enabled the contest to include a separate category for out-of-county participants. The poems reflected the individual’s personal feelings about life, hope, dreams and love, which celebrated the heart and souls of the participants as they have enjoyed “Life’s Voyages.” A celebration for the entries and recognition of the winners took place on Wednesday, March 27, at the Wood County Senior Center. The declared winner was Rosemary Yankin from Perrysburg, author of “Hello, I’m Here. You’re There.” The second place winner was Carolyn Rebar from Bowling Green, with her poem entitled, “Another Birthday.” Larry Slaughterbeck, of North Baltimore, received an honorable mention for his work entitled, “January Corn Stalks of Wood County.” “I am honored and appreciative to be selected as the winner,” siad Ms. Yankin. “It is totally awesome to receive recognition for this poem.” Her poem was written in 2012, a year after she had lost her spouse. Her husband was the inspiration for the poem. The poem was her way of being in touch with him as he is not with her anymore. The program was sponsored by Otterbein Skilled Nursing and Rehab Neighborhoods. Bowling Green State University assisted with the judging of the entries. Whitehouse to host flower market on Saturdays in May The Village of Whitehouse will host Saturday morning Flower Markets on May 4, 11, 18, and 25 in downtown Whitehouse. The game remained scoreless throughout the first two innings due to strong pitching performances by Mark Delas, PHS, and Eagles pitcher Robson until the bottom of the third inning. Jackets senior Steve Slocum, tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field to make the game 1-0. Senior Austin Lee connected with a triple at the bottom of the fourth scoring Slocum, who walked. Lee scored on a fielding error by York, Clay’s second baseman, to make the score 3- 0. The Jackets led the entire game, but Clay scored two Lourdes University student art exhibit to open Saturday Lourdes University will presents its annual student art exhibition April 13 through May 3, in the Russell J. Children’s Choir to hold audition prep class The Children’s Choir of Northwest Ohio is offering a free audition prep class on Monday, April 22, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at Community of Christ Church in Whitehouse. The performances will be Friday, April 19, at 2 p.m.; Saturday, April 20, at 2 and 7 p.m., and Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m. The presentation will take place at the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant Street, Maumee.
