again, placing 20th overall
Jackets rout Springfield in Northern Lakes League opener
By Scott Buker
The Perrysburg High
School varsity football team
displayed a convincing victory
in its Northern Lakes
League opener. The Jackets
scored 22 points in the first
five minutes of the game to
spark a 50-28 victory over
the Springfield Blue Devils
at Springfield High School
last Friday night.
PHS built a 50-0 halftime
lead before sitting down
many of their starters for the
second half.
The Jackets scored early
and often beginning with
their first drive of the game.
Perrysburg took the ball 83
yards and finalized the scoring
drive with a one-yard
touchdown run by junior
Mark Delas.
On the Blue Devils’ first
possession, the Jacket defense
forced a three and out
to bring on the Springfield
punting team. The snap
sailed over the punter’s head
and Perrysburg’s Kadin
Llewellyn pounced on the
ball and returned it six yards
for the second Jacket touchdown.
After a disappointing start
to the 2012 season, the Perrysburg
High School girls
cross country team showed
major signs of improvement
at the Chet Sulwood Invitational
held at the Ottawa Park
Golf Course.
Twenty of the 26 runners
ran season best times and
both the varsity and junior
varisty teams finished third in
their respective races.
The varsity team was led
by the 10th place finish of
freshman Katie Menke
(20:24) and the 14th place
A Steve Slocum to Nate
Patterson pass converted the
two-point play, giving Perrysburg
a 15-0 lead with 7:35
to play in the opening quarter.
On the second play of the
next drive, Slocum, playing
defense, intercepted a
Springfield pass and turned it
into six more points. After
the extra point, Perrysburg
took a 22-0 lead.
Springfield, desperately
trying to overcome the Jacket
start, took control of their
possession at their own eightyard
line. The Devils converted
on four first downs,
driving down to the Perrysburg
32-yard line before
Llewellyn made his second
big play of the game.
The junior defensive end
intercepted an attempted
screen pass, killing the drive
and giving the ball right back
to the PHS offense.
It took Perrysburg only
two plays to capitalize as
Slocum connected with Patterson
on a 38-yard gain and
then Slocum dashed into the
end-zone from 18 yards out
for the score, giving the Jack-
A group of runners that included
Emily Henry (21:27),
Allie Kemp (21:29), Jessica
Bohenkamp (21:31), Allie
Prybelski (21:32), and Brionnah
Wyse (21:33) ran as a
pack and solidified the strong
team finish for the Yellow
Jackets. Having five girls finish
within six seconds of each
other, working and finishing
together, was a great sign for
the young harriers. Running
the first quarter.
After a three and out from
Springfield, Austin Bishop
caught his second touchdown
pass of the season for the
Jackets. The senior receiver
hauled in a six-yard slant
from Slocum at the 10:23
mark in the second quarter
making the score 36-0.
Two quick screen plays to
sophomore Seth Durham led
to the Jackets’ next score, this
one again coming from
Slocum, courtesy of an 11yard
touchdown run.
Delas scored his second
touchdown of the night with
1:34 to play in the half on a
68-yard run, pushing the
score to 50-0 heading into
halftime.
With many of the PHS reserves
playing, the Blue Devils
were able to score 28
points during the second half
to make the final score 50-28
in favor of Perrysburg.
