PHS girls tennis team is 5-1 in Northern Lakes League competition
The Perrysburg High
School varsity girls tennis
team started the Northern
Lakes League season with
four straight wins. They
beat Bowling Green in a
close match, 3-2.
Winning for PHS was
freshman Kennedy Northcutt
with a 6-2, 7-5 win at
second singles.
Junior Jordan Spidel easily
won her third singles
match at 6-1, 6-1.
The second doubles team
of sophomore Camryn Kiel
and senior Grace Conley
easily won 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Jaden Northcutt
lost to Bowling Green’s undefeated
first singles player,
6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Sarah Fastnacht
and senior Alexis Riffer
had a tough match at first
doubles against a very aggressive
BG team. They lost
6-3, 6-2.
Their next NLL match
was against Maumee. In
this match Perrysburg
showed their domination by
beating Maumee, 5-0, and
only losing a total of nine
games.
Winning for PHS was
first singles player Jaden
Northcutt 6-0, 6-1; second
singles player Kennedy
Northcutt, 6-0, 6-2, and third
singles player freshman
Moira Sams in a 6-3, 6-1
victory. Doubles winners
were Sarah Fastnacht and
Jordan Spidel 6-1, 6-1 and
seniors Mackenzie Hayes
and Emily Mettert 6-1, 6-0.
PHS then traveled to Sylvania
Southview for their
first NLL road trip. Perrysburg
again had a very strong
day, winning 5-0 over the
Senior captains on the girls varsity tennis team are, from left: Grace Conley, Mackenzie
Hayes, Emily Mettert and Alexis Riffer.
Southview Cougars.
Jaden Northcutt won 6-3,
6-4 at first singles. Kennedy
Northcutt won 6-3, 6-1 at
second singles, and Moira
Sams won 6-1, 6-1 at third
singles.
The PHS first doubles
team of Sarah Fastnacht and
Jordan Spidel won 6-3, 7-6
in a hard fought match.
Grace Conley and Camryn
Kiel also won at second doubles
at 6-2, 6-1.
Springfield came to the
home of the PHS girls at
Perrysburg Tennis Center on
September 6. Perrysburg
once again came prepared to
play great quality tennis on
all five varsity courts. They
won 5-0, dropping only 12
total games.
Jaden Northcutt won 6-0,
6-1, while her sister
Kennedy won 6-3, 6-0.
Moira Sams dominated at
third singles winning 6-1, 6-
1. First doubles was won by
Jordan Spidel and Sarah
Fastnacht 6-4, 6-1. Grace
Conley and Camryn Kiel
won easily at second doubles
6-0, 6-1.
On Tuesday, September
11, Perrysburg traveled to
Anthony Wayne. Last season
Anthony Wayne ended
up winning the NLL tournament
and the NLL team trophy
for the season. Anthony
Wayne has many returning
letter winners on their team.
They ended up being too
much for Perrysburg to handle
at all five positions. Anthony
Wayne won the match
5-0. Several courts, though,
were very close.
Jaden Northcutt played a
beautiful match at first singles
against senior Sarah
Jankowski. Jaden did a great
job at returning Sarah’s hard
hitting ground strokes.
Jaden did her best in trying
to move her opponent side to
side with her well placed
slice returns. Jaden took
both sets to a tie breaker but
fell short losing 7-6, 7-6.
Kennedy Northcutt was
up against a very tall and
consistent opponent in
Mackenzie Krieg. Kennedy
is very good at chasing
down lots of balls in every
match she plays. Her opponent
this time was just as
good at playing defense but
from a higher vantage point.
Kennedy ended up losing
the match, 6-1, 6-2.
Moira Sams took the
early lead in her third singles
match against Madie Smith.
As the first set progressed,
Madie started to improve her
game and better used the
very windy conditions to her
advantage. Moira fought
hard in both sets but ended
up losing 6-4, 7-6.
Both doubles matches
also were very close. Jordan
Spidel and Sarah Fastnacht
took awhile to get adjusted
to the wind and their opponents
aggressive style of
play. They lost the first set
6-3. In the second set, the
PHS team decided to double
back. This strategy was
much more effective against
this team. They fought hard
throughout the second set to
get to a 7 point tie breaker
for the set. They ended up
losing the tie breaker and the
set. The final score was 6-3,
7-6.
The undefeated second
doubles team of Grace Conley
and Camryn Kiel took on
the undefeated AW team of
Megan Gucciardo and Jordyn
Cousino. This match
was an exciting match from
beginning to end. Grace and
Camryn came out strong the
first set with well placed
volleys and overheads. PHS
won 6-3.
In the second set, the AW
team adjusted their strategy
and played more consistently,
winning it 6-3.
In the third and final set,
both teams battled back and
forth. In the end, the AW
team pulled out the victory
with a 7-5 win.
On Thursday, September
13, PHS took on Napoleon
at Perrysburg Tennis Center.
PHS won all three singles
positions. Jaden won a
three-set match after 2-1/2
hours of playing, with a
score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Her
sister Kennedy won her
three-set match 4-6, 6-2, 6-
1. Winning easily in two sets
was Moira 6-1, 6-0.
Napoleon is known for
having strong doubles
teams. Alexis and Jordan
played first doubles and
fought hard but came up
short losing 6-4, 6-3.
Camryn and Grace won
at the second doubles position
6-4, 6-2.
Perrysburg won the overall
match, 4-1, to end the
week 5-1 in the NLL.
