State to conduct performance audit of school
district; board to discuss grade reconfiguring
By Beth Church
The Rossford Board of
Education is moving ahead
with a full performance audit
of the school district by the
state auditor’s office.
The performance audit
will examine and make recommendations
on four areas
of school operations: financial,
human resources, facilities
and transportation.
At a November 19 meeting,
the board approved a full
audit, by a vote of 4-1 with
board member Doug Miller
voting no.
A proposal from the state
auditor’s office explaining the
potential scope of the audit set
a cost of $62,000.
The goal of the report is to
help the district save money,
become more efficient and
more effective and provide an
objective third party analysis.
Mr. Miller questioned
The Rossford Public
Library has recorded another
series of oral histories
from a group of community
residents.
This series focuses on
longtime Rossford residents.
The first-person narratives
are casual stories told
by each person, prompted by
questions from library staff
member Kris Goldsmith.
Anita Nawrocki Shufritz
graduated from Rossford
High School in 1958, but in
essence, she’s never truly
left.
Her parents Anita (Baker)
and Adalbert Nawrocki were
from Rossford. She was
raised here along with her
sister Agnes, after the loss of
their brother at age 9.
She is a lifelong resident
and has worked for the
Rossford School system, primarily
at the high school, for
the past 54 years and is still
going strong.
Mrs. Shufritz remembers
her own high school years
both fondly and vividly. She
recalls great participation in
athletics and clubs, and sock
dances after nearly every
game. Students had more
time then to take part in
extracurricular activities, and
although girls played on
whether a full audit would
overlap with areas currently
being examined by Garmann
Miller Architects for a Needs
Assessment and a Condition
Assessment of the district’s
facilities.
“There are some aspects
that will overlap with
Garmann Miller but for the
most part, there will be many
items that are different,”
Superintendent Bill McFarland
explained.
Mr. Miller responded, “I
think we should wait and
decide on the scope [of the
audit] later with the overlap.”
Board president Dawn
Burks said the audit will take
four to six months for the
auditor’s office to complete.
Data collected from
Rossford will be compared to
peer data from five to seven
school districts–which the
school board would agree
intramural teams or through
the GAA, there were plenty
of school-related activities.
She began working as an
office assistant as a sophomore.
Little did she know
that would be the beginning
of her life’s work.
During her junior year,
she became assistant to the
Athletic Director, Alton
(Bud) Gladieux. Doing such
a good job, she was
approached during her senior
year by Rosemary Miller and
Bernice Baughman about a
permanent job at the school.
She recalled that her
interview was conducted as
she and the superintendent
walked through the tunnel
under the school. She was
instructed to keep the interview
confidential and did
so–until she was congratulated
on her new position in
front of a group of senior
girls who were initially not
happy that she was hired
instead of any of them.
Eventually, her good
friends Helen Klena (Fix),
Elaine Kalisik (Jackson) and
Judy Steward (Sattler) joined
her in the office and they had
such a good time working
together, it all worked out
well.
Mrs. Shufritz initially
handled payroll for the entire
upon–plus industry standards
from academic journals and
best practices.
Grade Reconfiguring
The board of education
will discuss options for reconfiguring
grades and school
buildings at the December 5
work session.
Board members Beverly
Koch and Jackie Brown will
meet prior with school administrators
to hear their comments
on the plan.
The board had asked the
superintendent to explore
some cost-saving options for
the district, which may
include changing grades and
school buildings.
Among the options are
clustering with younger
grades in one building and
older grades in another building,
or adding sixth grade to
the junior high school.
After the meeting, Mr.
Anita Shufritz
district–both classified and
certified employees, as well
as the purchasing of supplies.
She moved to the junior high
school after that and commented
that during those
years “those junior high kids
needed a mom, an aunt and a
grandma–and in that office,
you were it.”
After a short time in the
administration building, she
was asked by then superintendent
Gail Brubaker to
oversee payroll and purchasing
once again, although the
accounting was now being
done “by machine.”
Mrs. Shufritz really
wanted to be “back with the
kids” so she bargained to do
along with his wife, Camille, and children, Neil IV and Nadia, pulled the
switch to turn on the lights. A reception with hot chocolate and cookies
followed. Cub Scout Pack 43 led the singing of Christmas carols.
McFarland said he has compiled
“a look at the numbers
with the teachers and rooms.”
Reconfiguring is supported
by the teachers, he said,
because it allows those teaching
the same grade levels to
work together in the same
building.
“Assessment and the new
Common Core standards
depend on teachers working
together,” he added.
Wrestling Room
Improvements
Mr. McFarland updated
the board on improvements to
the high school wrestling
room, which recently was
switched with the weight
room.
“The majority of the work
is complete,” he explained.
“Wrestlers are practicing in
the larger room, and all the
weight room equipment has
been moved into the other
her work out of the high
school building. She remembers
using a ditto machine
with all of the purple ink and
going from making copies to
scanning documents. She
believes she can track her
years through the many
changes in technology.
Working for a total of
nine principals so far, she
added, “Don’t even ask me
my favorite. I’ve had a few.”
She commented that current
RHS principal Tony
Brashear and vice principal
Pat Murtha are very involved
and really get to know their
students.
When asked about
changes in the student body
over the years, she noted that
back in the day, more students
were involved in activities.
“We were all involved
in something” she remembers,
“not just athletics, but
drama, band, choir, clubs.”
But not so much anymore.
“We offer nine different
activities in the fall–you
would think that they’d find
something.”
Another change among
students is a declining level
of respect, according to
“Miss Anita” as she is known
to the students.
She believes student dress
has something to do with
room.”
The board of education
last month agreed to switch
the rooms following concerns
about deplorable conditions
for student wrestlers.
At a past board meeting,
parents complained of water
leaking onto mats, mold
growing on walls, peeling
paint and 100-degree temperatures
among the conditions
of the wrestling practice
room.
The superintendent said
the cost of the move is nearly
$10,000, which includes the
mold air quality test.
The rooms were thoroughly
cleaned, lighting was
installed and ceilings were
dropped, he said, but doors
and mirrors still need to be
installed.
“Those rooms are cleaner
Library’s oral history series continues
Anita Shufritz recalls five decades of student life at RHS
that.“Students will gain
respect from presenting
themselves better.” She recognizes
that some families
are struggling, but believes
there is no excuse for poor
manners or a bad attitude.
During her time as cheerleading
advisor, she had an
extra inch added to the cheerleading
skirts, and three of
her aunts were nuns–one of
whom instilled the parochial
school uniforms policy at St.
Mary Magdalene.
While uncertain about
whether uniforms should be
required attire at RHS, she
said they do look nice at
other schools and take away
the decision of what to wear
each day.
In other areas concerning
student life today, Mrs.
Shufritz said with a laugh
that there is “too much going
on with Facebook–I’m not
on it because I don’t want to
know! Then there’s the technology–you
see third graders
walking around athletic
events with cell phones
now.”
Each day after morning
attendance, she calls the
homes of students who are
absent without notice and has
had to wake up some students,
which never would
Local illegal gambling clubs to be discussed
By Beth Church
Gambling clubs like
Hollywood Casino are nothing
new in the Toledo area.
It’s just that, in this generation,
they are now legal.
Terry Shaffer, author of a
new book on the history of
Toledo area gambling clubs,
will give a presentation
Wednesday, December 5, at
the Rossford Public Library.
“We had a very colorful
past in Toledo,” said the
author of “Illegal Gambling
Clubs of Toledo: The Chips,
the Dice, the Places and
Faces.”
“Back to the late 1800s,
we had a serious gambling
problem here.”
Mr. Shaffer’s book discusses
the sites, mobsters and
illegal activities. Included are
detailed descriptions of the
clubs with dates of operation,
addresses, owners and operators,
as well as police raids
that attempted to shut them
down.
His interest began more
than 15 years ago with a collection
of vintage dice, chips
and matchbooks from Nevada
casinos in the 1930s and
1940s.
He then discovered chips
from Toledo clubs at local
antique malls and started
researching their origins.
“I became more and more
interested–and once casinos
were legalized in Ohio, my
goal was to finish this book
by the opening of the new
casinos this summer.”
A local business owner,
Mr. Shaffer has lived in
Toledo since 1966 and is a
graduate of DeVilbiss High
School and the University of
Toledo.
His writing was fueled by
a chance visit to the Toledo
Police Museum where the
director told him about the
“missing files” on mobsters
and gamblers.
“These were mob files,
missing for decades,” he
explained. “They had been
subpoenaed, and the police
department was unable to
deliver them.”
“Finally, they were discovered,
and I was the first
researcher to have access.”
From those files, the
author was able to include in
his book the mug shots of the
Licavoli family and the
Purple Gang operating in
Detroit, Cleveland and
Toledo.
Bacon Street
Habitat house
dedication
set for Sunday
The public is invited to a
dedication ceremony at 3
p.m., this Sunday, December
2, for Rossford’s new
Habitat for Humanity home.
Habitat for Humanity of
Wood County and Ridge
Stone Builders have partnered
to build the first
Energy Star 3.0 home in
northwest Ohio at 219
Bacon Street.
“We are so close to completion,”
said Jennifer
Kephart, executive director,
Habitat for Humanity of
Wood County Ohio, earlier
this week.
“Siding goes up Tuesday
and Wednesday, carpet is to
be installed Thursday and
we’ll finish electrical work
this week. We’ll be just
about done by the weekend.”
The Fisher family has
been selected to receive the
Rossford home, which will
be the 31st Habitat home
built in Wood County.
The new build will be
complete and ready for the
family to call it home before
Christmas, she said.
The construction is funded
by a Neighborhood
Stabilization Program Grant.
“We are all thrilled with
the progress,” Ms. Kephart
said. “We’ve seen daily
prayers answered, that’s for
sure.”
many with carbon copies,
were “a fabulous wealth of
information.”
“The research has been a
treasure hunt for me,” he
added.
He also discovered communications
between Toledo
police officials and J. Edgar
Hoover, before the FBI had
been established.
The police department had
a “hoodlum squad” and
“morals squad” working
gambling-related cases.
One photo–shot when
even pinball machines were
illegal–shows two morals
squad detectives with a confiscated
pinball machine in
the evidence room.
Mr. Shaffer also tracked
news stories about illegal
gambling for his research.
He noted that after the turn
of the century, “nearly every
mayor used gambling as a
platform.
“There would be lots of
police activities around election
time, when the police
chief was directed to conduct
the raids,” he explained.
Police officers were challenged
in making arrests by
locked doors and electronic
buzzers at the clubs, as well
as lookouts, membership
cards and passwords to be
admitted.
“By the time the officers
could get inside, no one was
gambling–they were playing
gin rummy,” Mr. Shaffer
added.
Clubs were managed by
different types of operators,
he explained, such as the infamous
mobsters Pete, Thomas
or “Yonnie,” and James
Licavoli.
He described Thomas as
“an Al Capone type,” adding
that the mobsters were committing
extortion and murder
and blowing up businesses
with firebombs. Their “reign
of terror” in the area lasted
from 1931 to 1933.
However, there also were
gamblers operating establishments,
such as Jimmy “The
Gentleman Gambler” Hayes.
To help direct customers
to their clubs, a shuttle service–known
as “fish wagons”–ran
from the Toledo
hotels, taking clientele to
whatever club was operating
that day.
Toledo can boast of the
“largest illegal gambling
facility in the country,” he
said, which was Club Devon
on Benore Road.
David Kosmyna,
trumpet soloist
All Saints Christmas concert to be Dec. 9
The 11th annual Toledo
Symphony Christmas concert
at All Saints Catholic
Church in Rossford will be
held on Sunday, December 9.
The performance will be
filled with a collection of
holiday and classical
favorites from the symphony’s
repertoire, led by conductor
Jeffrey Pollock.
It also will feature trumpet
soloist David Kosmyna
and Jennifer Perry Edwards
as the soloist.
Dr. Kosmyna, a Toledo
native, teaches trumpet, theory
and jazz ensemble at
Ohio Northern University.
During the summer, he
teaches trumpet, chamber
brass, and composition at the
Pennsylvania Governor’s
School for the Arts at
Mercyhurst College in Erie,
Pennsylvania.
He holds a bachelor of
music education from the
University of Toledo, a master
Police Department’s investigation of local mobsters and
The chip, above, and
matchbook, at right, are
among the memorabilia of
old gambling clubs that
Mr. Shaffer has collected.
It operated from 1941 to
1944 and eventually closed
when a Detroit business executive
committed suicide over
$30,000 in gambling debts.
He wrote detailed letters to
the FBI, Toledo mayor and
police officials about his
experiences in the clubs.
Although that building is
no longer in existence, some
of the old clubs still stand
around Toledo today.
For instance, the
Chesterfield Club, at 4649
Detroit Avenue, operated in
the 1940s. It is probably best
known as the Old Nut House
and the Hull Nut Company,
which it later housed.
With a few exceptions, the
history of illegal gambling in
the area neared an end in 1951
when Congress began to
investigate organized crime.
Hearings, led by U.S.
Senator Estes Kefauver, were
held across the country,
including Cleveland.
Testimony at the hearings led
to the closings of many clubs.
trumpet performance from
the University of Cincinnati
College-Conservatory of
Music.
Dr. Kosmyna served as
principal trumpet of the
Western New York Chamber
Orchestra. He has performed
with the Kentucky
Symphony, the Slee
Sinfonietta (Buffalo, New
York), the Buffalo
Philharmonic Orchestra and
the Cincinnati Pops
Orchestra.
Dr. Kosmyna is active as
a composer and arranger, and
in 2007 the New York
Philharmonic Brass Quintet
performed some of his works
in Fukui, Japan.
He has recorded extensively
in both classical and
jazz styles and in 2003 was
awarded Best Traditional
Classic Jazz Album by the
Canadian Collector’s
Congress for his work with
the Climax Jazz Band of
Toronto, Canada.
Mr. Shaffer’s presentation
will take place at 6:30 p.m. at
the library.
He will bring a display of
old gambling club memorabilia
and will hold a question
and answer session after his
talk. Books will be available
for purchase and signing the
night of the event.
The event is free and open
to the public, but registration
is requested by calling 419-
When asked about traditions
specific to Rossford
High School, football Homecoming
week activities
quickly came up. “We used
to have the snake dance that
went from the high school
down Maple Street and up
Beech Street and then back to
the football field for the bonfire.
That was all such great
fun, until there was an explosion
in the fire in 1995. I got
the wood delivered myself,
so I know that it was safe, so
who knows what happened? I
had to have all the answers
and I did, but after that, there
were no more bonfires.”
She’s glad to see that the
whitewashing of local business
windows has returned,
but misses the Homecoming
floats and platform for the
attendants. She agreed that
many students don’t know
what they’re missing since
many of those traditions took
place long before they were
born.
Bulldog spirit never dies,
but Mrs. Shufritz noted that it
does fluctuate depending on
whether teams are winning.
She has noticed that pride
and spirit tend to be dictated
by athletes who lead the rest
of the student body.
She’s never seen anything
like the time in 1966 when
she had 2,200 tickets available
for a basketball game
leading up to the state playoffs,
and the line stretched
from the fieldhouse down to
Glenwood Road. Even later
playoff teams never saw the
excitement exhibited that
year. She hopes that the
many generations of RHS
students still living in Rossford
along with parents and
grandparents will help keep
the pride alive and growing.
Forms of student discipline
also have changed dramatically
over time.
“Kids used to be paddled
by the teachers, and then they
would turn around and sign
the paddle.” Now she says
there is a “calming chair”
that students sit in to wait to
200 block Maple Street,
see Mr. Murtha, who handles
most of the daily discipline.
If a student speaks to her
with an improper attitude,
she won’t respond until they
correct themselves. This
seems to work well for her,
and they quickly catch on
that she won’t tolerate that
behavior.
When questioned about
students’ maturity compared
to the past, Mrs. Shufritz
believes seniors generally
have always grown to be
mature, which is one of her
favorite parts about working
with teens–to watch them
grow up and find themselves
and who they want to be.
The other students’ maturity
seems to fluctuate with
what is going on in the
world. More kids are driving
and having to work to pay for
their car insurance so while
that is seen as mature, they
are not being involved in as
many group activities at
school, which may be seen as
important for team building
and learning to work together,
The school board will interview
applicants in February, and
the public then will be invited to
“We feel this is the most
important thing on our plate
right now,” Ms. Burks said.
Mr. McFarland currently is
serving as interim superintendent.
The board hopes to hire a
The meeting is open to the
After her several decades
in the attendance office, it
only seemed natural to ask
Mrs. Shufritz about the best
excuse she had heard for a
student absence or tardy.
“Oh, I could write a memoir”
she said, “and some kids
could have their own chapter;
but I will never forget the
time that a student said that
they had been caught by a
train on their way to school,
but I happened to know that
they lived on this side of the
tracks!”
Mercy breaks ground on new emergency and diagnostic center
By Deb Buker
Last spring, Mercy
announced plans for a freestanding
emergency and
diagnostic center in Perrysburg.
And recently, a groundbreaking
ceremony was held
for the new $12.7 million,
15,000 square foot facility–Mercy
Emergency and
Diagnostic Center–located
near the intersection of State
Route 25 and Eckel Junction
Road.
Welcoming the crowd,
Andrea Price, Mercy president
and CEO, said the
health care company is honored
to be in Perrysburg and
work with people in the city
and northern Wood County.
“Groundbreaking ceremonies
are really special to
me. They represent beginnings,
and I believe this is
the beginning of a great
partnership,” she said. “And,
I think it is fitting today to
read one of my favorite
quotes by Robert Lewis
Stephenson–‘Don’t judge
each day by the harvest you
reap, but by the seeds that
you plant.’ And that is really
what we are doing here
today–we are planting the
seeds for new health care in
this community. Mercy has
had a long tradition of emergency
services–we are
known for that–and we are
thrilled to provide that exact
same type of care that we
provide at our hospitals right
here in this community.”
Ms. Price also announced
another partnership–with
Perrysburg schools. The
schools’ art department will
create art to be displayed in
the new emergency and
diagnostic center, she added.
Chairman of the Mercy
board of trustees Dennis
Johnson said the new center
is a demonstration of fulfilling
Mercy’s mission.
“The mission is alive and
well today and calls upon us
to extend the healing ministry
of Jesus in the communities
we serve,” he said. “It
represents a commitment
that guides us in our decisions
and is a part of everything
we do–the mission
steers us to stay the course
each and every day.
The Perrysburg High School art department created a special banner welcoming Mercy to Perrysburg. Mercy
formed a partnership with Perrysburg schools and the art department will be creating art to be displayed at the
new Mercy Emergency and Diagnostic Center.
gency room here in Perrysburg.
Despite the troubled
economy in northwest Ohio,
the population is actually
growing here in Wood
County. With this growth, it
became obvious to us that
the residents here needed
faster and improved access
to leading edge emergency
medical care.”
Medical director of
Mercy LifeStar and Life
Flight services Dr. Chris
Goliver will head the new
emergency facility.
“The last time we stood
at this site, Mercy
announced plans for the
free-standing emergency
and diagnostic center,” said
the doctor and former Perrysburg
firefighter. “Now
after countless hours,
tremendous community support,
we are starting to see
those plans actually come
into action.”
Dr. Goliver told the
crowd that his career path
and transition from a firefighter
to an emergency
medicine physician was
interesting and exciting.
“Through this journey, I
have been fortunate to have
been involved with Mercy’s
emergency and trauma serv-
ices for the last 12 years,”
he said. “I’ve seen first hand
the difference it makes in
having top quality emergency
medical care readily
accessible. I am excited
about what this center will
mean to this area. When facing
a serious illness or
injury, the residents of the
community deserve the best
in emergency medical care.
“I am proud to say if you
live in Perrysburg or the surrounding
area, hospital quality
emergency services will
soon be conveniently located
close to where you live,
work and play.”
The new facility will
feature 10 examination
rooms, lab services and
imaging services typically
found in hospital settings
including MRI scans, CT
scans, 3D mammography,
digital radiology, ultrasound
and Dexascan. The center
with be open 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
Dr. Goliver said the fullservice
emergency room
will serve a wide range of
patients including those who
require a higher level of care
brought in by EMS
providers. It will be
designed to treat patients
The Toledo Museum of
Art announces the following
program highlights for December.
Admission is free.
Continuing Exhibitions
Leslie Adams: Drawn
from Life, through January
13, in Gallery 18. As a
young girl Leslie Adams attended
art classes at the
Toledo Museum of Art.
Today she is nationally
known for her portraits of
distinguished members of society
and civic leaders. The
first recipient of the Solo Exhibition
Award of the venerable
Toledo Area Artists
Exhibition in 2011, Ms.
Adams presents a new body
of approximately 20 works
incorporating Old Master
painting compositions and
drawing techniques. This
work is autobiographical,
weaving classical references
with a dash of 20th-century
pop culture. In it, she conveys
memories of TMA and
its collection together with
other people, places and objects
that have shaped her career
and life.
Prints and Authors from
the Time of Manet, through
January 13, in Works on
Paper Gallery. Édouard
Manet (1832–83) came of
age during a time of prolific
change in Paris and in French
society in general. While earlier
artists produced works of
biblical and mythological
subjects full of history and
allegory, artists like Manet
began to paint more freely
and to be inspired by the life
around them. Prints, photographs
and illustrated books
are included in this exhibition
of artworks produced
during Manet’s lifetime. Approximately
120 works by
some of the most talented
artists working in the period–including
Renoir,
Corot, Daumier, Whistler
and Manet himself–are featured.
Museum People: Faces
of TMA, through January
10, in Gallery 1. Museum
people–those who visit and
support art institutions–come
from all walks of life. Last
spring, hundreds of Toledo
Rudolph/Libbe Inc. has been honored with a prestigious
2012 Build Ohio Award for its work on the new Lake High
School in Wood County. The awards were announced on November,
16 by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of
Ohio in Columbus.
The project won top honors in the category of New Construction
over $20 million. This is Rudolph/Libbe’s ninth
Build Ohio Award. Rudolph/Libbe Inc. served as design/build
contractor for Lake High School.
The Lake High School project was, unofficially, Ohio’s
first construction reform project, using the design/build delivery
method. This project delivery process was permitted
under an urgent necessity provision for construction in an
emergency situation.
Construction began in April 2011, but the project truly
began June 5, 2010, when a killer tornado destroyed most of
the existing high school. Rudolph/Libbe Inc. responded
within an hour after the storm to assess damage to the high
school. A full crew mobilized before dawn the next day to
begin securing the site and cleaning up debris.
School officials wanted the new 144,980-square-foot high
school ready for students in July 2012.
Under the construction management delivery system, they
would have waited three years or longer to obtain occupancy.
However, the design/build delivery method gave school officials
the high-tech, cost-efficient high school they wanted in
15 months.
“We’re pleased to receive this recognition for our work on
the Lake High School project,” said Tim Alter, president of
Rudolph/Libbe Inc. “We had a great client in Lake Local
Schools. We also had outstanding people–the project team,
craftspeople, subcontractors and suppliers–providing the skill,
dedication and hard work that are integral to a successful project.
It’s an honor to have worked on a building which means
so much to our community and serves as an example of the
importance of Ohio Construction Reform to the owners of
public improvement projects.”
In 2011, Ohio Governor Kasich signed House Bill 153,
which included the first changes in the state’s method of performing
public construction in over 134 years. These changes,
known as Ohio Construction Reform or OCR, will substantially
change how public improvement projects are completed
and will permit the use of alternative construction delivery
methods.
Ohio Construction Reform retains the current multipleprime
design-bid-build project delivery method, but gives
public owners other construction options that are faster, involve
less risk and provide greater flexibility and most important,
lower cost. Ohio Construction Reform includes the
design/build delivery method which was used to construct
Lake High School.
“Lake High School is a strong example of the value that
the design/build delivery method brings to a project in terms
of speed, efficiency, quality and cost-effectiveness,” Alter
says.
Build Ohio is an annual awards competition that honors
members of the Associated General Contractors of Ohio for
excellence in construction. A panel of retired construction
professionals selected winners based on excellence in project
management, innovation in construction techniques or materials,
client service and meeting project challenges.
“Deadly Songs: Sirens
in Greek and Romany Funerary
Art,” December 7, at
7:30 p.m., in the Little Theater.
Andrea Mall, associate
registrar at TMA and AIA-
Toledo Society trustee, explores
the meaning behind
Sirens depicted in funerary
art and explains how these
frightful creatures became
associated with comfort in
the afterlife. Known for luring
unsuspecting sailors to
their deaths, the Sirens of
Homer’s Odyssey are described
in literary sources as
creatures to be feared and
avoided. Yet ancient Greeks
and Romans chose to display
images of these beings on
their funerary monuments.
Depicted as human-headed
birds, the iconography associated
with Sirens was a popular
motif appearing in a
funerary context stretching
back to the Egyptian period.
The discussion is cosponsored
by the Archaeological
Institute of America-Toledo
Society.
Mailbox Check
Now is the time to check your mailbox to make sure
that it will withstand the upcoming winter snows.
When city snowplows clear the streets, the road
slush and snow are very heavy and
can knock down your mailbox.
Make certain your mailbox and the
post can withstand this force, because
the City of Rossford will only
replace/repair mailboxes that are
actually hit by the snowplow.
Also, be certain your mailbox
is upright and not leaning
into the street. It is the
homeowners’ responsibility to maintain their mailbox
to withstand the rigors of a winter of snow.
All Saints kindergarteners visit Cherry Street Mission
All Saints kindergarten students surprised residents of the Cherry Street Mission
with gift bags and funds they had collected for meals. A volunteer from the mission
visited the class and shared with the students that for $1.73 the mission in downtown
Toledo can provide a meal to a person in need.
As a service project, students sponsored a jeans pass day for the school. Any All
Saints student who brought in $1.73 on November 13 could wear jeans to school
instead of their uniform. The jeans day generated enough funds for 188 meals.
The kindergarten students also collected candy from fellow students. With the help
of middle school students, they filled 275 gift bags with candy to take to the residents
of the mission. Another 100 gift bags were filled with candy and donated to the All
Saints Food Pantry for local neighbors in need.
Dr. Zouhary displays two of the sweaters collected at his
Sweaters collected by
Dr. Zouhary for homeless
Rossford dentist Dr. Bill
Zouhary again is organizing
a sweater drive that will benefit
the Cherry Street Mission
and Sparrow’s Nest homeless
shelters.
Dr. Zouhary said he was
inspired to undertake the collection
when he brought out
his sweaters for the colder
weather.
“A thought occurred to
me: why not throw 80 percent
of this montage–all the
ones I never wear–into a
plastic bag and deliver them
to the homeless shelters in
Toledo?” he explained.
thought. I bet that many other
‘A Christmas Carol’
to be performed at BGSU
Bowling Green State University
will present a new production
of Charles Dickens’s
“A Christmas Carol” at the
Donnell Theatre in the Wolfe
Center for the Arts.
Adapted by Margaret Mc-
Cubbin, an associate professor
of theatre and film, the tale of
redemption follows the powerful
story of Scrooge, the lonely
miser who, with the help from
ghosts from his past, present,
and future, finds a second
chance to become a loving,
generous human being. Combining
humor, sentiment and
spectacle with authentic period
carols, the production continues
the holiday tradition for the
entire family.
Performances are at 8 p.m.
November 29 and 30, and December
1, and at 2 p.m. on December
Holidays in the Manor House at Wildwood
A Toledo tradition more
than three decades in the making
returns to Wildwood Preserve
Sunday, December 2
through Sunday, December 9.
Thirty-five differently decorated
areas of the stately
Manor House will sparkle
with holiday spirit, courtesy of
hundreds of volunteers. Displays
will include themes such
as a Polish Christmas dinner,
Christmas Masquerade and the
Manor House Railway.
Last year, more than
18,000 people toured the decorated
mansion during the
eight-day event. Tours are free.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
daily.
The Manor House was
built in the 1930s as the family
home of Robert and Page
Stranahan. In the mid-1970s,
Zoar Lutheran Church
will host a Blue Christmas
Worship service on Sunday,
December 16, at 3 p.m.
Many find the holiday
season to be especially difficult
because of the absence of
loved ones. Losses come in
many forms: marriages and
relationships come to an end;
friends and family members
die; medical diagnoses limit
mobility and activity; lives
are irrevocably changed.
All are invited to gather as
